Plays games and that about it
(September 29, 2008) |
|
To start with I am not "a gamer", but I am an IT systems engineer in Microsoft products. I bought this as a sort of media centre with the games as a sort of bonus. In the games dpt it is pretty good, great graphics, sound even on a std TV.
However there are a no of things I just expected this thing to do which it either doesn't do at all or doesn't do very well.
The reasonably large 60GB hard drive is next to useless at present because it is impossible to store anything other than XBL downloads (mostly trash trailers and demos) and music you rip directly from the DVD drive. You cannot transfer any files to or from the XBOX, even to your PC running an MS OS.
I have a large amount of music and video (much of it Microsoft) on usb hard drives. The XBOX 360 will attach USB drives but it does not recognize the NTFS file system even though that is the primary Microsoft file system anyone running XP or Vista is likely to be using. Even after reformatting back to FAT32, (not easy as XP/Vista will not format a FAT32 partition over 32GB!) and the XBOX being able to see it there are problems/shortcomings.
Music:- You can play music MP3s from it but it will not allow simple things like saving a music playlist if the source is a USB drive. You can't even save it to the hard disk. Only music stored on the HD can have playlists created for it and that means ripping your music again directly onto the the XBOX, because (have I said this already) you CANNOT COPY ANY FILES TO IT!!!
Video:- It will not play any of my Microsoft or technet files even though they are in .WMV or .AVI format and supplied by s0dding MICROSOFT. Codec support seems crap.
Even though MS heralds the XBOX 360's networking capabilities it does not have even a basic browser, which even most mobile phones have. (OK I knew it didn't have that before I bought it but still!). |

Cheap Hardware VS Great Games
(September 27, 2008) |
|
I've purchased the 60GB XBOX 360 today, mainly because of the exclusive games like DOA4 and HALO3 that aren't available for my PS3.
Since long ago I've been waiting to finally purchase this console and now that the RROD issue is fixed I've thought this was the right time. Actually not everything is OK, since the new controller was a major let down! This controller is a piece of cheap plastic and the d-pad is totally unreliable. The original XBOX controller S was way better than this one. There is also the huge noise that comes out of the box when a disc is inserted, and believe me when I say that it can cause a headache.
The quality of the product is very bad! Overall, regarding hardware quality, I think that the PS3 and the SIX-AXIS controller are in a much higher league. I am one more disappointed gamer regarding Microsoft's poor product quality.
Buy this console only if you drool over the exclusive games and if that is not an issue just buy the PS3. |

Xbox 360
(September 25, 2008) |
|
there was quite alot of hype over the next Gen consoles, the first to be released was the xbox 360. when you purchase it, it's all "oohs and ahhhs" at the great graphics and stylish design. and yes the graphics are amazing, so is the styling but what really lets the side down is two things.
the first is reliability, me and about 10 of my friends had 360's that were bought 6 months after launch, only 3 are still working. they all have the lights of doom flashing! and after several emails to Microsoft they agreed to repair my console, when i got it back some time later it still had the problem.
The second is a lack of a soul, the first incarnation (black and crystal xbox 1) had soul because of flawed design and a great line up of games, HALO, FABLE, KOTOR! all great games that actually have engaging story-lines and don't focus on online gaming. the 360 has pathetic games that fail to engage you like the xbox did. modern games only focus on rubbish online aspects and graphics, story-lines are lost. the sequels that appear on the 360 are all cash'ins. and some games can only be played if you download fresh updates. WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO DONT HAVE THE INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to sum up the xbox 360 is a great technical achievement, but lacks passion, soul and long term reliability.

Excellent Buy
(September 25, 2008) |
|
What can I say?? Excellent. Decided to buy this due to having the old Xbox, and now the price drop has happened, and also the new version has come onto the market. It's well worth the money. Not just for the good games, I have spent most of the evening messing round with the media connection, which hasn't been mentioned much on the reviews. Basically you can(if you have connected the to your home Pc network)enable media share on your pc, via the latest version of windows media player 11, which picked up my xbox straight away. I had to enable a couple of settings through my hardware firewall(port forwarding). I can now listen to and view my photo's from my upstairs PC, through my wireless network, downstairs on my TV. Great. Just off to find out what else this beauty does. And yes, the 360 is very quiet!! |

Clunky & noisy but great games
(September 22, 2008) |
|
As a PS3 owner since day 1 when I recently bought an xbox 360 60gb I found there were reasons why the xbox is cheaper. The construction feels cheap, it has no style, I couldn't believe how much noise it made when I turned it on and the graphics seem rather jaggy. However...
Bought Forza 2 - fantastic gameplay, blows Gran Turismo 5 Prologue away
The controller seems better built than the Playstation's 6 axis device if perhaps inferior ergonomically.
Basically you don't notice the hardware's clunkiness when you're playing so I have to say its excellent value |
