| Description:
Just in case you didn't know, the Tony Hawk's series is the best skateboarding sim ever--and now, with the release of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, it's even more so. Skateboarding is taken far more seriously nowadays, with legions of baggy trousered youths now able to refer to moves such as a bluntside or overcrook with a perfectly straight face. Indeed, the list of silly names for ridiculously dangerous stunts has been increased for this latest sequel and you now have the added ability to skitch (hold onto the back of a moving car) and grind through traffic. The big new change, though, is the career mode, which now has specific goals and milestones for all the different skaters and really adds to the replayability. Curiously, the graphics are still not particularly good, with the same slightly muddy, undefined look to them that the developers presumably now think is all part of the fun. They have however thankfully realised that having time limits for the levels was an unnecessary limitation and, except for a few specific missions, you've now got all the time in the world to graze your knees and cave in your skull. Add in a new and improved online mode and you've got everything the discerning extreme sportsman could desire. --David Jenkins This review refers to the PS2 version of the game.

The Best Tony Hawk Game

I have played all the Tony Hawk games, including American wasteland. I felt all of them were brilliant, but this one was always my favourite. I moved to England from America, and my copy of the game doesn't work here. Instead of getting American Wasteland, I stuck with four. Here's why.
I like the ability to roam around, and I felt that many of the concepts introduced in this game were used again in the next games, and they were simply evolved. I think that after THPS 4, the game producers felt pressure to still come up with groundbreaking things, and it didn't work that well. For example, the 'caveman' is complete rubbish. You shouldn't be able to keep a combo going by stepping off your board.
Another thing which I love about Tony Hawk 4, which wasn't in its successors, was the attempt at keeping skater's reputations.
If you look closely at THPS 1,2,3,4 they don't do much in terms of pissing people off. I loved this, because being a skater myself I hate the way people stereotype me. But sadly, after 4, that all went away.
I reccomend this game to everyone who is a true fan of the Tony Hawk skateboarding series. |

Return of the hawk

Tony Hawk's pro Skater 4 is the best ever skateboarding game. The levels are huge and the trick system is 2nd to none. This game could last for ever with all it's features and now half the price of before, it's the best Hawk game yet |

For better or worse.

Firstly I have to say that the first Tony Hawks's game and I played was the third in the series, and on the X-Box.
I really loved the third one, and so I did approach the fourth one of the series with some trepidation, as more often than not things tend to decline as things go on with computer games, at least in my experience.
I have to say that this is perhaps not the case with Tony Hawks 4, though it does have its share of good points, and bad.The first major difference from 3 to 4 is that the two-minute time limit per level has been scrapped. I noticed that a lot of the magazines that reviewed it didn't like this, but I have to say that I did.
What they have done instead is to give you unlimited time to skate round the somewhat larger areas with no set time limit, but have put characters in the skate arena that you can talk to, and who will then give you tasks to complete, which will have a time limit for you to do them in. Graphically I would have to say that Tony Hawks 4 did not totally impressed me. In fact I would say I was a little letdown, as a lots of the areas feel quite bland.
This is not to say that they are bad, but I would have liked to have seen better, and certainly from the power of the X-Box. The gameplay though it is still excellent. As with Tony Hawks 3 there are a huge array of tricks you can perform, all of which can be fairly easily performed thanks to a nice and intuitive control system.
With this being said I think new players may well struggle in the early stages as the does not appear to be the learning curve that there was in Tony Hawks 3, and certainly it doesn't have the training system you had in 3.
I guess this was done on the basis that many people would have played Tony Hawks 3, and would want an improved challenge. While I can understand this it will certainly be hard for many players to achieve some of the tasks you need to do in this one.
If I remember correctly the highest score you had to get on the last stage and Tony Hawks 3 was 400,000, but in Tony Hawks 4 you can be looking at scores of 1.5 million, still within a two-minute time limit.
Also while some of the tasks of quite inventive they can also be quite hard, and you can find yourself having to repeat some tasks over and over again to get them right. This IM sure will frustrate quite a few players. One of the other things I didn't like was that they seem to have changed the replay mode the Tony Hawks 4, and it seems a step backwards. You now can only view the replay from one angle, rather than the many angles you could in Tony Hawks 3. This made no sense to me as to why they would have done this, but done it may have, much to my annoyance. Overall I'm glad that I bought this game, and I would recommend it to others, but with the caution that people who have not played the previous titles might well struggle with the learning curve in the early days.
I really can't say it is better or worse than Tony Hawks 3, so I'll just stick with saying that it's good and worth some of your time to play. |

A new beginning for tony

Tony is back! and better than ever, in this new slick game. It has more features than ever before, like now you can hitch a ride on the back of a car which is good fun and as you'd expect there is lots of new levels and a brand new type of career. The multiplayer is great fun as there is new games for you to play like tag and many others. Well, i'm off to play it now, i hope you enjoy it as much as i do!!! |

Tony Hawk does it again!

My god, this game is the best! If you are into snowboarding, skating or whatever this is the game for you. Its just difficult enough to make it last for a while, so the gameplay is superb. The graphics could have been a little bit better, but i really dont care because you stop thinking about it the moment you start skating. I have choosen to give this game a 5! because its probably the best game i have to my xbox. |
