Overall this game is excellent, it's fun to play, fairly easy to get to grips with but still difficult enough to keep you challenged and interested.
It's a sniper game set during the final months of World War Two. You play an OSS agent codenamed 'Eagle Watch' whose mission it is to infiltrate Berlin and prevent the Russians from capturing atom bomb technology from the defeated Germans.
The surroundings in the game are mostly ruins with the occasional enemy base thrown in for good measure, you spend the game moving around the city finding targets and blowing them away with your rifle or if you prefer your grenades, machine gun or silenced pistol these are also available. The game also gives you access to dynamite, first aid kits and my personal favourite; The trip wire grenade....believe me you can have hours of fun with those alone!!
The sniping aspect of the game is impressive, you can set the difficulty level depending on your skill level. You can switch on/off the wind, gravity etc to make your shooting more realistic or simplify it if you are having a little difficulty.
The missions are quite varied. Generally you must help the German resistance or assasinate some important commander or rescue a captured agent etc.
The game can be quite gory in places. For example; if you fire a very accurate shot over a long distance (i.e a shot aimed at the head) the bullet will approach the target in slow motion and....well you can guess the rest. It's a great idea and effectively illustrates the horrible side of war but for some children it might be a bit graphic.
My only reservations about the game are some glitches in the graphics i.e you can get stuck on invisible walls or the barrel of your rifle will disappear inside a wall as you crawl past but generally the graphics are good for a PS2 game. Also some aspects of the story are a bit naff. Would a sniper deep behind enemy lines be dispatching tanks or rescuing captured agents? I think not, but if that kind of detail doesn't bother you then I think you will be amazed by this game.
I would go as far as to say if you are a fan of war games then Sniper Elite should be in your collection.

Classy game. Has just about everything - good graphics with lots of nice touches, sound to match producing a very good atmosphere. Play with a decent sound system rather than just the TV and you can even use the sound of footsteps to warn you of nearby enemies, and use the direction of gunshot sounds to track people down in the online mode.
Controls, story and AI also very good. Better than the Medal of Honour or Call of Duty games if you are a fan of WWII games.
Good number of missions with decent sized maps, you can approach each mission in a number of ways as there is no liniar path you must follow, and online mode is very good - set it up for purely sniper skills with rifles only of include grenades and machine guns for a more arcade shooter. |

Excellent, immersive game. Perfect distraction after (or in between) long work shifts. Perfect balance between long range, sneaky sniper activity and straight up guns blazing "everybody must die" mode - it's not a mindless shoot 'em up, and demands thought and strategy to work through properly, but it's a joy to play through, such to the extent that you don't mind getting down on your belly and crawling down a bombed out street just to off a sentry so as not to bring any unwanted attention from his comrades. Great environments, really took a liking to some of those maps. Graphics are pretty decent, with some really nice attention to detail (nearby birds taking flight when you loose a few rounds...) Your enemies are mostly intelligent enough to make the experience really enjoyable - and although there are one or two blips (a soldier watches his nearby comrades catch bullets and fall to the ground, but doesn't move or run for cover...) it was mostly all good. Sniper Elite holds a special place in my heart. Now, where's the sequel? |
