Avoid
(October 06, 2008) |
|
Like many others on here, I bought the game with great expectation but can't get past the first hurdle. As soon as the game starts I get an error message with "Colonization has encountered an unexpected error". Not sure if this is related to SecuROM but there is no online help for this issue so I'm left with no option but to retrun to Amazon. Very dissapointing |

A Patch on The Original
(October 03, 2008) |
|
The original colonization took up more of my time than any other game has ever done. A great epic experience it was. I have wanted to play it again for 10 years but the graphics became unbearable. So I was delighted to see a remake - same game better graphics. On the surface this is the same game but the mechanics of the game are awful. Education and migration become impossible because of steep 'inflation'. Enjoyed my first 100 turns but after that frustration sets in as 'the kings army' appears to grow to the population of China and you have a farmer with a musket to defend your colony. The impression I get is that nobody actually beta tested this game into the second half!!!
A patch fixing the game mechanics could turn my rating of this game from 2 stars to five overnight.... but until that happens this game will not be a patch on Colonization I. |

Return of a classic
(October 03, 2008) |
|
Like many people around the world I played the original DOS version of Colonization and loved it. And the new version is exactly what it says on the tin, a pretty up to date version of the original game using the Civ4 engine.
If you played the original you will be able to jump straight in to the game, if you play Civ4 you'll recognise a lot of the features but the underlying game mechanics will be something new.
Compared to the complexity of today's games you could say its a simple game but in my opinion that ain't a bad thing in this case.
Glad I decided to revisit this classic, defiantly a must for any game collection.

WARNING - SecuROM issues
(October 01, 2008) |
|
I was looking forward to playing this game so much that I pre-ordered it. After installing it I was really disappointed to discover not only have I installed the game but also this instrusive and malicious piece of software called Securom, which treats me like a common thief and refuses to load the game, because it has decided that the game is a copy. This sort of software is disgraceful. I have paid money for this game but now I can't play it.
The instructions to overcome the problem on SecureRom's website are overly-complicated and long-winded. I am quite technically minded but couldn't understand what to do. And anyway, why should I? Maybe I could suggest that the idiots that thought this was a good idea to read Lynne Truss's book, "Talk to the Hand" and in particular the chapter called "Why am I the one doing this?. I'm the customer, I don't work for these people,I shouldn't have to jump through hoops to make a piece of software work on my PC that I have payed my hard-earned cash for.
I have de-installed the game and I am going to send it back to Amazon for a refund. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone, because the DRM software is instrusive and malicious (i.e: it stops you playing the game you have paid for and bought a license to use). I am extremely disappointed with Firaxis/2K Games for treating their customers poorly. I will think twice before buying another game from them, which is a shame as I have purchased every Civ game in the franchise.

Just right.
(September 28, 2008) |

I've been a massive fan of both the original Colonization, and all the Civ games. I have to say though, I was a bit worried to see the Coloniztion shown as little little more than an add-on for Civ4 (even though it is stand-alone).
Starting the game you an interface that it very similar to Civ4. The game map looks similar to Civ4 too, BUT has been updated and looks much better; the terrain looks clearer and the water textures have been improved and made reflective. For the gameplay, I was half expecting to see a sort of screwed up Coloniztion/Civ4 hybrid. I didn't. Infact, apart from a few small differences the new Colonization play almost exactly the same as the old; fantastic.
Despite the fact the gameplay hasn't been updated much from the 1994 game, it is still a blast to play. Anyone with an interest for strategy games should give this a go. |
