A good addition - but also changes things

This game is an add on to the very enjoyable strategy game 'Zoo Tycoon 2' and you will need the former to play this. This review focuses on the Endangered Species add on only, so it may be helpful to read in conjunction with my review of Zoo Tycoon 2 itself.
I bought this add on when I reached the stage of boredom with the original (only when I'd done everything there was to do). It did a great job of revitalising my interest. A large number of interesting new animals and objects are available, which is a definite plus. It also has the new features of allowing you to build 'zoo tours' which may be via jeep or via sky tram. This adds a whole new aspect to the game and gives experienced players a new challenge. You can also build elevated paths, although this isn't that much of a thrill.
There are also several elements of this game which make it more challenging - a good thing if you've exhausted all the options in the original game. Some zoos come with 'conservation areas' where you cannot make any changes to the terrain, either by removing objects or adding them.
Animal breeding is also much more closely controlled and animals will only mate with those completely non-related. This means buying in new animals fairly frequently which can be a real pain in the early stages of the game. It certainly requires more work and thought than in Zoo Tycoon 2, and can be frustrating for that. However, it does solve the problem of uncontrollable multiplication in numbers which I frequently had with the original game and was equally irritating.
Graphically it is still very good, although it seems to get darker and lighter (possibly trying to indicate days/seasons). The darker phases are really quite dark and it becomes very hard to see things on the screen especially detail, which can be annoying and cause serious problems.
On the plus side, zoo fame seems to increase more quickly (unless that's my imagination) and it is definitely much faster to change round the selection of animals available for adoptions, a particular advantage in campaign and challenge play.
I like this addition and think it is worth buying if you have done all there is to do with your Zoo Tycoon 2 original. But buyers should be aware that it doesn't just add things on, it also subtly changes many aspects of play so you end up with a slightly different game. |

Excellent, but...

I agree that this adds many great features to the original, such as Jeeps and new animals, but it does have one problem. It adds in animal family trees meaning your animals can't interbreed. Sounds sensible but when your zoo is well developed, it only takes the death of one breeding animal such as a Giant Panda and suddenly it costs $50,000 to replace! Very infuriating after a while. |
