This game is pants!

This game is utter rubbish. Where the hell did they get the idea to change the way the graphics worked? Graphics are rubbish, gameplay is non existant. Do not buy this game |

Unplayable

I'm giving NWN2 1 star because in my opinion the terrible camera alone makes the game unplayable. After reading the reviews criticizing the camera action I had to give it a try myself because I couldn't believe it would be all that bad - well it was. The camera lurched and jerked about and I could never get it to where I wanted it. Even downloading the updates didn't help. What a pity for a game that showed so much promise. |

Excellent

I've just finished installing the game on my laptop and i've been playing for about an hour. So far i'm enjoying it very much and can't see where all the bad reviews are coming from. Okay so the game play is a bit jerky, but wacking down the graphics quality helped that, and the camera is a bit off, but when you've been waiting to play this game as long as I have these are small problems which can be easily ignored.
By computer is brand new but a long way from being top of the range and I've had no problems with the game so far (although the updates took a while to download).
I had a quick look at the toolset before starting and it's so completely different that I didn't want to waste time figuring out and started playing (will read the manual later!).
Definately a good buy for anyone that enjoyed the original or enjoy this type of game. |

Neverwinter Nights 2 and the review.
(January 03, 2008) |

Personally as a gamer, I love games that have intricate and evolving stories. One such example of this rare trait today is the Half Life series.
And Neverwinter Nights 2 also takes that cake. With a beggining that allows you to skip tutorials or get to grips once again, you are thrown straight into the action. From there, journey your way through a vast wildnerness to Neverwinter once more and the story just keerps getting bigger and better. No, there won't be any spoilers here, but I do reccomend you buy this game if you haven't already.
Graphically, the games is beautiful. Well textured and well modeled objects make this game look believeable and fun to play. A bad point is that if you want to experience the ultimate graphic pleasure, you need a serious rig to do it, not to mention a decent graphics card that can handle Shaders 2.0...
But even on the low settings (which I played on) the game was still a wonder.
The things that make this game fun are quite numerous. Like the fact it is so well balanced regardless of what class you choose to play as.
Every quest you finish has a reward suited to a particular class.
The companion system means yoyu have very human characters to interact with as the story goes by, and certainly made the game interesting, allowing you to bully or be nice to the neccessary NPC.
Other things that are fun include a brand new creation system, i.e you can smith your own swords, mix your own potions etc. As long as you have the right components, you can use a particular workbench and create whatever you think will be most useful. The only thing is, in order to make the best weapons (which everyone wants to do) you must be near a god like
level.
I have to say, with regard to the NPCs, that the A.I is a bit clumsy and sometimes outright annoying. Companions will stay in one place whilst you explore 10 miles in another direction until you summon them through a slow and somewhat complicated command system.
I've given my views, but I still say give this game a go. No game will ever be perfect and don't get me wrong, this one is great, but this one will steal many hours of your sleep...for a very good reason. You just want to keep on at it.
This game lost a star because of its high demand for performance and poor A.I.
By the way, if you do get this, have a go of the world creator and make your own adventures. It's well worth it. |

Flawed but with promise...

I haven't tried the multi-player, as it isn't my thing, so my comments are about the single player campaigns. I'm running on XP with a reasonable set up and plenty of disk space. This baby gobbles the drive so don't try running it if you have limited space.
This isn't NWN1 nor is it Baldur's Gate and it most certainly isn't Morrowind or Oblivion. I came to it after replaying Oblivion for the third time and I have to admit I was a trifle under whelmed at first. I sympathise with Jake6130 (excellent review btw) who says he can't understand the rave reviews. The problem with NWN2 is the incredibly annoying camera. At default settings this whizzes about so fast that you feel dizzy. It seems to zoom in and zoom out without any reference to anything you do as a player. I suggest spending some time slowing down the mouse and scrolling activities and then spending some time in the tutorial getting to understand how it works so that you can be in control of it. Out in the open ineffective mouse camera handling isn't that serious but inside dungeons and buildings it becomes a nightmare.
I haven't played the game all the way through and I'm not certain I will. The camera does drive me to despair but just occasionally when the wretched thing stays put for long enough I get a vision of what NWN2 is trying to do and then I can understand the rave reviews because it is very good indeed. But then the camera angle alters without my `say so' and I go back to agreeing with Jake - this is a highly flawed game.
Having said all that - it's cheap. I don't mind the linear story. The interminable cut-scenes have got on my nerves - I have a feeling that they're there to save on programming :-) The voice-overs are patchy. However, the `loading' screens are breath-takingly beautiful and this feels like a game that struggles to be excellent and ground breaking but never quite does it. I loved NWN1 and I found being back in Neverwinter rather touching but aside from that the glitches - save often the little beast crashes - spoil it rather. It isn't a great game - it has potential but it feels rushed out with insufficient testing with real users. My guess is the people who were using the camera knew how to handle it and getting the hang of it for a lot of the rest of us is going to be difficult. At 12 years old I may have had more patience but as an adult with limited time I don't want to spend it learning how to handle the camera and as other reviewers have said, inside the game becomes incredibly difficult because of that. I can understand why they gave up on it; I may too.
Incidentally, the community has produced code to modify the camera - but I haven't tried it. It has been met with approval though. Finally, I bought my game in January 2007 and updating it took forever and I mean 'forever' - be prepared for a long wait. The patches for this game are legion and legendary :-)
