Virtua Tennis
| Description:
Even if you're not fond of sports titles in general, the simple pick-up-and-play feel and speedy on-court action in Virtua Tennis on the PC make it a worthy addition to any game library. Sega did an excellent job making sure even those unfamiliar with the rules and strategy of tennis will be able to jump right into the game. With a little practice you can pop lobs, perform an overhead smash or even return the ball with a through-the-legs trick shot. Starting the game presents three game modes. Arcade mode is a direct translation of the coin-operated arcade game in which you must defeat five challengers in order to win a championship. Exhibition mode allows you to choose a player and then challenge any of the other available tennis players in singles or doubles matches. World Circuit mode casts the player as a tennis superstar, touring the world and competing for heaps of cash and worldwide rank. If you're looking to play as one of the top tennis aces in the world, you're going to be disappointed. No Sampras, Agassi or any other tennis giants are to be found. Rather, you're stuck with 16 smaller names including Jim Courier, Carlos Moyà and Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Despite the recent boom in popularity, the women's tennis circuit is unfortunately completely absent. Sega's presentation and graphics are very well done on this PC version and could almost be mistaken for a real televised match. Details such as the crowds, line judges and instant replays look stunning. It's a shame that Virtua Tennis doesn't feature the famous venues and tournaments of real tennis, but the game's imitation stadiums in England, New York and France look close enough to be recognizable. The player graphics are fantastic. Each player displays plenty of detail in everything from facial expressions to sneaker logos. Both the TV-style overhead view and the behind-the-shoulder viewpoints feature animation that's almost always ultra-smooth and is guaranteed to keep your eyes glued to the screen. --Mark Brooks

What a game
(August 06, 2002) |
This is the best tennis stimulas game around...as a massive tennis fan and a keen player this game has exceeded its review. The graphics are excellent, sound is crisp and the attention to detail makes the game even more enjoyable. The amount of real life sceanrios bought into the game is excellent, i.e playing on clay is a slow as compared to grass which is a much faster surface, this is taken into consideration when playing the game and and your game tactics have to adapted to that i.e playing more baseline rallies. Overall a must have game, which will bring you hours of fun. |

Not a Tennis Sim
(July 24, 2002) |
If you're expecting a true tennis sim, then this game will disappoint. You cannot play matches longer than one set and there are no tournaments to compete in. However, what the game offers is will still keep you glued to your PC. Enter the World competition and you have to beat opponents (sometimes in a best of three games match) and complete various challenges. As you progress your opponents and challenges become more difficult - but you'll find that your world ranking increases too. The graphics quality is excellent in parts, particularly the beginning of each match and when you win a championship, but the player's faces are poorly rendered. If you really must have a tennis game then this is the best that's available at the moment, but it's not perfect. |

Tennis???
(July 16, 2002) |
This is OK but differs from the actual game of tennis in that it is actually easier to win a game against an opponents serve than one of your own serve. Also there are no sets!!! I mean..this isn`t really tennis. It`s pong with knobs, bells and whistles on..... |

just like wimbledon?
(July 06, 2002) |
i bought this game in the mind that it would get me through the intense need to play tennis whenever wimbledon is on. well what can i say? graphics wise it passes the test, crisp, clear and clean graphics (and that's on a voodoo3), gameplay is extremely addictive and fun. problem is that's all that's good about this game, there are no where near enough players to choose from, in the world circuit section training jumps from extremely easy to extremely hard with no inbetween. oh well you can't have everything i supposse. |

SMASHing
(March 27, 2002) |
Having read the various magazine reviews of Virtua Tennis i was dubious. I LOVED the arcade machine and it ate my money whenever i was out. Having played the demo I can only say that this is a near perfect conversion of the arcade machine. So, in simple terms if you liked the arcade machine you will like this game. Its a game designed to be fun (which makes a nice change) and ok, you dont get the motion blur on the ball that clearly (BIG DEAL) and the replays dont really serve a purpose ('scuse the pun) but all in all this is a really fun tennis game - expect anything else and you will be disappointed. I wasn't though, but I was addicted to the arcade version. The only gripe I can find with this game is the "consoley" type interface (i.e. press "start" to begin) which kinda niggles but as it doesnt affect the gameplay in anyway I cant fault it! If you like tennis (or liked the arcade machine) buy this game (set and match)! :-) |
