Oh dear........
(December 19, 2007) |
|
This game could have been so very good had the developer stuck with the cars from Trackmania Nations, instead they've included all the terrible ones from the other TM games which are absolutely no fun to drive. Some are so fast that you cannot possibly control them, some so slow that you wouldn't possibly want to. I've given this 2 stars for the courses that use the cars from TM Nations.... even with these there are mud tracks though that are completely unnecessary and ruin the fun. Download TM Nations instead, its free and fun. |

I hate the menu system in this game
(November 04, 2007) |
|
Graphics is good, gameplay is good, in fact I can imagine this game being addictive. But, when I bought this game I imagined I would be ALLOWED to race; the description mentions several types of cars and race tracks. Instead, all I could see were a bunch of disabled menus. In order to unlock any of them, I have to perform mind-numbingly repetitive races from the only available menu. Frankly, I would prefer to choose by myself which type of race I would like to play instead of having some software developer forcing his/her idea on me. Without those ridiculous menus the game would be great, but such as they are, they completely ruin the game. I have already uninstalled it. What a disappointment. |

The most addictive game I've played on the PC in years!
(October 04, 2007) |
|
Remember Micro Machines? Well if that series had a big brother this would definitely be it! TrackMania United is without doubt one of the most addictive "just-one-more-go" game I've ever played on the PC. However this game is primarily an online game so if you cant play online you'll be quite limited in what you can do.
The premise is simple. You have 7 types of vehicles which handle differently and 7 different types of environments you can race on. The tracks themselves are a mix between short technical twisty circuits and fast breakneck speed stunt tracks including loops, jumps, rolls, bounces, reversing down holes - the range of what you can do is limited to only your imagination.
Why your imagination?
Well its because you are given an easy to use track editor to make your own! If time trials aren't what your after you can literally lose hours at a time building new tracks for you to test out. If your happy with your creation you can pop it online for everyone to use for free or you can make people pay for them with the games currency of "coppers" which you can pick up for setting good times on tracks or just simply being an active player.
It's online when the game really comes alive. Dedicated servers run with their own tracks that people have hand selected to play. You can choose servers based on how highly ranked you are compared to other players so you can suss out if you're going to come last all the time or not by this and pick accordingly. Online racing mainly consists of being given say 5 minutes to set your best time on a track and when there's 50 people all battling away it becomes hectic and manic. The track files are so small you don't need to pre-download them and I have never experienced slow down despite having a 4 year old PC. There's an online ranking system that gives you a rank for everything you do which is always fun and the community is a very good one to be let loose in to chat etc too.
Rarely have I found a game I've become so addicted too where coming 40th out of 50 has been so much fun! I cannot recommend it enough. Buy buy buy! |

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GET THIS GAME!!!!!
I am 1 of the many users of trackmania United (tmu) and it's less than a year old. As most tmu-ers i started out on trackmania nations (tmn) which is a free download.
TMU has a solo and an online mode. the solo mode gets quite boring after a while but you can download tracks to practice from tmx. But tmu is mainly an online game. u can chat, there's teams/groups and most people are kind on there so it's good for the younger one's.
the online part never get's boring as new people are coming and going and there are hundreds of servers. I like it mainly because it's some light hearted racing, but also social. there are literally thousands of tracks that people have made and are uploading to tmx.
it may not be as popular as tmn YET!! as slowly but surely people are moving from tmn to tmu, if like me it is still possible to keep an account on tmn aswell.
tmu features a ranking system for area's of the globe eg. i'm rankked 2998th in the world, 85th in great britain, 69th in England and 8th in the north west of england. that's according to my points. the ranks that show up midrace (press tab) are your specific ranks for that environment. eg. my ranks range from 1779th in stadium to 4598th in speed/desert
TMU involves many environments which makes it the BIG DADDY of trackmanias. it has the bay, coast and island environments from sunrise.
it has rally, speed and alpine from original and stadium from nations.
you can't upgrade cars, but you can make them look cool by either making or downloading them.
the downers that gives it a 4 star is yes you can use multiple users but here's a list of why that's useless and the changes it makes:
firstly all of the users will have the same online logon, same ammount of online points, same ammount of coppers, the same ammount of solo races unlocked. they'll also have the same online nickname. The only difference will be their offline hotseat name.
Also, like tmn, making a server is hard and risky. A normal server you make, you have to stay on it or it'll close, this is risky because you must disable your internet antivirus and firewall.
to make a dedicated server (so u don't have to stay on your server) you have to do the same as before but also sum extra stuff. this'll only work well with landline broadband.
in the game if your timer goes red and it says in that chat box that you have an invalid time, just press delete to restart and it'll be fine.
This is probably the best, most enjoyable, addictive (to a point) and most often only master server working online racing game.
BUYBUYBUYBUY!!!! and so far amazon is the cheapest place!!!!!!

Simple, clean, addictive racing fun
(April 11, 2007) |
|
There are two racing game extremes. At one is the hyper-customisable, hyper-realistic title that requires a huge time investment to get into. At the other end of the spectrum is TrackMania - a simple and fun racing game that is more about the tracks than the cars.
TrackMania United contains hundreds of brilliantly designed tracks from the previous games, as well as many new ones and, of course, the usual options for making your own tracks - one of the best things about the TrackMania series is the lively community of track building and time trial racing.
It may not be the most complex or realistic racing game but the racing has an abstract purity and the tracks a mathematical elegance. It's perfect for short bursts of racing fun. |
