Intelligent Golfers Wanted!
(August 23, 2006) |
|
With the new game - Tiger 2007 - due in September, I'd really like to make a couple of wishes before Tiger 2006 goes to the great attic in the sky. Overall I've enjoyed the game, particularly the Career Mode, but I'm disappointed by the AI/skill level of so-called Top Pro golfers. There's very little enjoyment to be had thrashing opponents who can barely reach the fairway with a drive (& if they do, the next shot is invariably smashed deep into the rough) & generally play like total duffers. I've played the TW series since way back & recall that back in the day even Colin Montgomerie was invincible! Equally, the courses tend to "play short" & the hazards generally don't pose much of a threat. Still, put me on a "very dry" green & you'll hear my knees knocking from the next tee. EA have decided to go to the other extreme with the 2 "Fantasy Courses" which - as in Tiger 2006 - are virtually unplayable & a total waste of space. If I'd wanted a "Crazy Golf" game I'd have bought one. Unless you're turned on by 600+yds zig-zagging par 4's, where even par is pretty unlikely, and a strange tendency for some shots - however they're hit or directed - to end up in exactly the same place ("out of bounds" naturally), suspicious, some might say...
However, I still prefer the Tiger W series to any other golf games I've tried & look forward to the next instalment. |

Not impressed

Having played 2004 and thoroughly enjoyed it I thought I would wait for 2006 to come down in price a bit. I should have been alerted by the plummet in price! Being playing for a couple of days and I am not impressed. The graphics seem worse than 2004 and the courses are fewer. Not an improvement as I had hoped. Still, I'll persevere. |

A dissapointment.

The game while decent for a person not familiar with the Tiger Woods series, sadly lacks any significantly new features from its predecessors. It seems to employ the same graphics engine as Tiger Woods 2005, which in itself is not a problem, however provides little reason if one already ownes an installment of the TW game to purchase TW 2006. Another dissapointing aspect of the game is the lack of new commentary. The game makes use of the same commentators and comments as in previous releases in this series. This proves pretty irritating as you've probably become bored of the comments in the previous release. Add to that similar, if not identical, player celebrations and one starts to wonder how this game differs from TW 2005. On the plus side, it does feature some new courses, new clothing items and a new feature to ‘travel back in time’ and play some of the old greats. The actual game play is not greatly dissimilar from TW 2005, however proves more difficult than previously. For anyone trying to compete with the 3 mouse click , forget about it! Playing on anything but novice is impossible until your golfer is fully upgraded or unless you choose a professional golfer. On the whole a decent golf game for anyone not familiar with the Tiger Woods series, however greatly dissapointing for anyone already familiar with any of the releases in the series. |

Probably a 4.5

Having played the TW series on PS2 for a number of years I decided on the switch to PC, and it was worth it, and a very different experience, no more adding spin in flight, no more power boosts, no more hole-in-ones on every Par 3, its a much better and more realistsic golf game but........... there's still a lot missing, all of the good features, or fun features in the PS2 version seem to be missing for some reason in the PC version, there are no real-time calender events, there's no wagering on course as in the PS2 version, but it doesn't detract from the other features. The one big major improvement in the switch to PC is the graphics, much much better, and the ability to control how you watch your shot, ball cam, TV cam, reverse cam etc etc, not forgetting the ability to design your own course and download user-created courses. All in all, even with some of the old favorites missing, the PC version is more than worth a purchase. |

Tigers reign continues...

This game continues in the same way as its previous installments have gone. Graphics are excellent, and the gameplay is as good as ever. The one glitch is that only logitech gamepads are compatible with the game. But then again there's no other golf game in the market that comes even close to this, so you might as well get the gamepad too, and enjoy. |
