Sid Meier's SimGolf (PC)
|
|
|
| Description:
Despite what it looks like on the box, Sid Meier's Sim Golf isn't the latest game to attempt to faithfully recreate the sport of golf. Instead, the idea this time is to build and manage your own golf course, designing your own holes and attempting to attract the major tournaments in the process. Taking its lead from the simple interface of games such as Theme Park, Sid Meier's Sim Golf is very easy to get to grips with, courtesy of intuitive controls and a helpful tutorial mode. You can choose to set your golf club up in one of 16 locations across the globe, and thanks to an inheritance from your late Uncle, you've got limited funding to help you get things going. Naturally enough, you'll start small, building up and expanding as you get more successful, and it'll take some time until you can finish building the 18th, at which point you can try and attract tournaments whilst constructing a new course elsewhere in the world. Admittedly, the premise may not initially generate excitement, but credit where credit's due, for this is a challenging, enjoyable strategy game that never leaves you bewildered, yet still presents quite a job to start generating profit. The lack of an overall objective beyond that won't endear it to those who like a predefined goal to achieve, and the laid-back gameplay style may similarly leave some players cold. Yet there are so many intricate little challenges to the game, particularly when attempting to construct the best holes you can, that it's an easy way to lose track of time and relax for a couple of hours. An ideal next step for fans of Tycoon-style games.--Simon Brew

Golfing Heaven
(November 11, 2004) |
|
I stumbled upon this game while I was browsing on Amazon. As a keen golfer, I was intrigued by the game, but was somewhat wary about it due to the fact that it had had a very quiet release and that there were no reviews for it. There was no reason for my to be so apprehensive, because this game is as close to gaming heaven as it is possible to get. The concept is simple: Build a golf course and make it profitable. There are two modes-either with a budget or with an unlimited cash balance. To be honest, I prefer the second mode, because your imagination and ability to create great courses is not constrained by money worries. Building a course is surpisingly easy-just choose different terrain features e.g fairway, sand, green, and place them wherever you want. Sounds easy enough, but to create a good course, you really need to think about where you place everything. A good course is one which makes the golfer think, and rewards the brave and imaginative, punishes the hot-headed, and is a good challenge for the average golfer. You can embellish your course with landmarks, celebrity homes and other extras, all of which add to the enjoyment of the golfers who play it. An added bonus is that you can actually play the course yourself. It's a really innovative method of playing the course. Whereby you select the type of shot you want to play e.g. straight, draw, fade, chip, and then set the general direction of the shot by moving the trajectory line of the ball. Very simple, but very, very effective. This is my favourite game of the past few years, mainly due to the fact that I have a great passion for golf. If you love golf, you'll love this, and even if you aren't a fan of the sport, this game can still provide a lot of fun. |

What a load of fun

Although I have not yet "mastered" the game of golf, I seem to have course design down pat. All thanks to this little gem. It may seem cheesy, but once you get into it, this is a lot of fun. Keeping your golfers happy and ensuring that your course is highly rated is not as easy as it sounds. Of course, if you are bored, you can always select Easy and have some relaxing fun... |

Surprising--says it all

Build a golf resort and play golf on it. Sounds boring, doesn't it? Especially with graphics like this! However, this game has an unusual addictiveness that easily overpowers the downsides of the game. The options are fairly wide, and the gameplay is amazing. Although obviously based a lot on The Sims, it has a unique quality that makes it different (in a good way) from all other business simulations and sports games. I strongly advise you to buy this game. |

Hooked from the first tee
(July 18, 2002) |

When I looked at the reviews, I was slightly sceptical as to whether I would enjoy it or not. Once installed, I realised that this was a great game, that would keep me addicted for hours. There is no limit to the possible permutations that you can have on the game. Trying to juggle keeping your customers happy, while making the course challenging enough to attract tournaments is a fine line, and if you cross the wrong side, you soon know about it. It you cross the right side, then you are sitting pretty on top of the world - and you know it. Buy it, you never know, you may just enjoy playing it! |

Delayed?
(May 11, 2002) |

I do enjoy a round or two of golf (on my PC) So when I heard about Sid Meier's SimGolf I downloaded the demo immediately! This game will appeal to a lot of 'Sim and strategy' fans, the name Sid Meier says it all.. Theres plenty of variety and even I could navigate through all the finances, info & statistics (and that says a lot). Theres also enough bad jokes & wise cracks to last a lifetime. Although the actuall golfing aspect of the game isnt on par (sorry) with the likes of 'PGA Champ Golf 2000' or 'Links 2001' it does'nt pretend to be. Its a much more light harted affair which will ultimmately appeal to a wider public. The Graphics first off were a bit disapointing, but as the gameplay became more involving the games overall 'look'& 'feel' felt right. SimGolf lets you design your very own coarse (shrubbery and all) & lets you play on it. Cant be bad can it! |
