IL2 Sturmovik
|
|
|
| Description:
Offering you the chance to fly 31 Russian, German and American planes IL2 Sturmovik plans to give the mantle held by Microsoft's Combat Flight Sim a run for its money. Based mostly on the Russian side of things, this flight simulator will appeal to anyone looking for a challenge and features everything from stalling engines, impressive AI run enemy and even the ability to play the gunner positions on some planes. While the game play will keep you on your toes for many a mission--there is a level editor included to further your enjoyment--the real icing on the cake is in the little details. View the plane from outside while you shoot your way through a dogfight and you'll notice cartridges falling to the ground. Go too high and the plane starts to leave turbulence trails. Multiplayer options haven't been neglected either and the game can accommodate up to a whopping 32 players in dogfight mode and 16 when tackling co-operative missions, making this a great game to play with friends. If you're a fan of the Microsoft combat flight series, then IL2 Sturmovik is going to be the perfect addition to your catalogue. If however, you are new to the flight simulator genre, then this might be a little too taxing to start with. --Jason Denwood

BUY THIS GAME NOW!!
(January 03, 2004) |

This game rocks, from the brilliant Russian aircraft such as the YAKs, to the weird and wonderful German aircraft, really some of them are weird!! The graphics are beautiful. The terrain is not flat with buildings painted on it, like in other sims, the buildings are 3D, there are trucks, bikes, trains and plenty more. There is a mission editor to make your own places, which is simple to use. I love this, I must have been playing for six months now. There is a great multiplayer, you can play online with friends at Ubi.com, or play LAN with a linked PC. My suggestion is get yourself a force-feedback joystick too, as it is compatible, and well, is perfect for feeling the vibrations of the plane as you do a 10,000ft dive in a Mig, and it falls apart. Buy this, you can do anything, from smashing your own plane to pieces by trying to land on the water (you do sink), to blowing the enemies wings off. Oh, and you can be a gunner too, which is great fun, particularly in multiplayer. Buy it!! |

Some late thoughts from Merseyside
(September 18, 2003) |

I guess thet I'm prolly the last person who will ever write a review of IL2, however here are my thoughts, as a real-life pilot and addictee to Flight-Sims. It's amazing, no really it is, once I got past some minor initial installation problems I was hooked. Training missions are relevant and fun although the single-play missions I found too limiting. Immersion is absolute! Graffix smooth, superb & engaging and sounds outstanding & not too intrusive. A technical review - No, a ringing endorsement - Yes. Compared to CFS3 (a year younger), there is NO comparison. As for 'Forgotten Battles', well maybe, when I'm flying from the outskirts of Berlin I'll get around to opening the box. |

Superb
(January 06, 2003) |

This is simply a beautiful sim. Outstanding graphics and the icing on the cake was to play this using a pair of 3D shutter glasses - in cockpit view there's a real sense of depth - the wings actually look like they are outside of the cockpit behind glass instead of the usual 2D offering, AAA fire which has you ducking as it streaks toward you - fantastic. I like my flight sims and I just love this one - the only downside is the fact that the game updates are rather large but this is a minor hiccup when you consider the quality of this game. |

The definitive WW2 flight sim
(September 19, 2002) |
|
IL2-Sturmovik is the state of the art for PC WW2 flight sims. If you have a beefy PC (at least P3-1GHz with 256MB RAM and GeForce2 graphics) you are in for a visual treat. The graphics are simply fantastic. Realistic clouds, weather effects (rain, snow, thunder), and lighting. The models are works of art, and the controls let you zoom in to admire them. Damage modelling is superb. You can actually see wooden struts protruding when a wing is shot off! Combat is hectic and difficult, like the real thing. When you do manage to down an enemy you feel like you have really achieved something. To see the sky filled with BF-109's and the ground littered with tanks and AA guns is something else. Flak explodes all around, sunlight glints off your canopy momentarily blinding you, planes shudder, radios scream for help, sirens wail. Amazing. Downsides (minor IMHO): 1. The interface is rather dry. 2. The supplied music is dreadful. Luckily you can provide your own MP3s. 3. The manual is really not up to scratch and hard to read. 4. The campaign is not dynamic, there is no real sense of "comradeship" with your fellow pilots. But these are minor quibbles. Maddox games deserve all our praise for creating this game. They continue to upgrade it with *free* updates providing new missions and planes (for example the latest patch 1.2 includes a flyable Stuka with missions). The creator, Oleg Maddox, regularly speaks to fans on the official Ubisoft forums. Bottom line - if you have any interest at all in flight sims you need this game. It will blow your socks off. |

The Best of the Bunch
(June 28, 2002) |

If you're thinking of buying a combat flight simulation game then this is the one. OK, it may not have received so much "hoopla" as CFS 1 and 2 or B17 (yawn), but believe me, this has more realism without overkill dificulty to keep you glued to your joystick. If you're a beginner and buy this game you'll be dissapointed with the other games you pick up (except Jane's WWII Fighters). If you're already an aficionado of the genre then this will make a superb addition to your collection. ENJOY ! |
