IL-2 Sturmovik
|
|
|
| Description:
Offering you the chance to fly 31 Russian, German and American planes IL2 Sturmovik plans to give the mantle held by Microsoft's Combat Flight Sim a run for its money. Based mostly on the Russian side of things, this flight simulator will appeal to anyone looking for a challenge and features everything from stalling engines, impressive AI run enemy and even the ability to play the gunner positions on some planes. While the gameplay will keep you on your toes for many a mission--there is a level editor included to further your enjoyment--the real icing on the cake is in the little details. View the plane from outside while you shoot your way through a dogfight and you'll notice cartridges falling to the ground. Go too high and the plane starts to leave turbulence trails. Multiplayer options haven't been neglected either and the game can accommodate up to a whopping 32 players in dogfight mode and 16 when tackling cooperative missions, making this a great game to play with friends. If you're a fan of the Microsoft combat flight series, then IL2 Sturmovik is going to be the perfect addition to your catalogue. If however, you are new to the flight simulator genre, then this might be a little too taxing to start with. --Jason Denwood

Hope I can fly the Stuka and Messerschmitt in this game

This game is fantastic, i have been hunting for flight sims for a while and found this looked at the reviews to it and many people gave it a high rating, and as soon as you play it you can see why. The graphics are great, the cockpits are highly detailed as are the outsides of the planes, the graphics of the pilot may not be the best when you escape from the plane as he looks like a load of rectangles pilled ontop of one another. Targeting isn't like todays weaponary like heat seekers but instead you only have a very small Crosshair insinde the cockpit meaning its very difficult to hit something you can get a closer view from the crosshar which helps, but then you need to watch your speed as not to fly staright pass any enemy fighters or bombers or not to lose to much speed as the enemy will escape, and in the whole game i have only destroyed TWO planes. Targeting vehicles is harder still as they are tiny and tend to be moving, and the best way of destroying them is doing dive attacks, which you can do on the second level with the Germans but as you concentrate on the tiny crosshair and target you may forget to look at you alltitude, and every time i did manage to destroy a vehicle i ended up in the soil right next to wreckage. Take offs and landings are a good feature as you need to wait for a row of fighters/ bombers to take of unless your the leader, taking of without enough speed means your going to become part of the runway or you may make it away but the engine ends up stalling and crash, Landing is harder and is made dangerous if you have Bombs you never dropped becasue if you land to fast you will end up losing the wheels etc and the bombs will blow up or you can just crash and have no wings left onto the Plane or all that is left is the cockpit. |

Learn from this, Microsoft!

Absolutely superb, I knew there was a good reason to have a decent PC and this is it. The aircraft modelling is mind-blowingly beautiful with fantastic weathering effects and damage modelling, the handling of the aircraft obeys the laws of physics to the letter, making it challenging but rewarding (when you get it right) and of the many aircraft you can fly, all have their own individual strengths and weaknesses. With all of the realism settings switched on it's by no means easy and you will find yourself spinning earthwards after over-controlling an aeroplane more than once. To really truly appreciate this sim you'll want a force-feedback joystick to use with it too and while I'm on the subject of bedfellows for this incredibly cheap but brilliant simulator, get Forgotten Battles and Operation Barbarossa to go with it. Then you'll never look back, (at Microsoft....who appear to lag way behind and consider all combat flight sims to be somehow akin to arcade shoot-em-ups). A cautionary note here: I don't know how well IL-2 runs on a borderline system but I know that on a good PC it is far far better than any of the CFS range from Microsoft and cheaper to boot. I suppose that for people who haven't studied the history of combat flying, this sim might be a bit obscure, after all, very few English speaking pilots had much to do with combat on the Eastern Front and instead of the 'usual' nationality options (British, American, German or Japanese) the choice is limited to German or Russian. (Note here, if you get 'Forgotten Battles' you can be Finnish or Hungarian too). Don't let this put you off from buying this simulator, if you're one of those who likes to look out of the window while you're flying, the landscapes are well modelled with stunning looking forests, hills, sea and water textures and cities although you have to remember that this is the rather bleak wartime landscape of Russia and not the picture postcard blanket of fields that you'd be likely to find in other parts of Europe. I'd better stop now before I end up going into a kind of fanatical, bleary eyed fervour and start repeating myself ad-nausium, three words to finish: BUY IT NOW! |

Immersive is the word!

Having just about given up on flight simulators about a decade ago, I returned to the genre with IL-2 Sturmovik. In it, I have found just about everything that a WWII-aviation-history-lover could hope for: realistic aerodynamics, great graphics, wide-range of aircraft, convincing terrain and immersive atmosphere. It is the only computer game that I have ever played where afterwards I read combatant memoirs with a new appreciation and insight. The game is a real challenge, and that is what keeps you coming back for more. Buy it! |

The ultimate flight sim
(August 21, 2003) |

First of lets get one thing straight! this game is not an ARCADE SHOOT EM UP it is in fact a fantastic world war two combat sim. You get to fly the Russian IL2 Sturmovik a Russian anti tank aircraft(called the Black Death by the Germans)on various missions right through the war. Lets start with the graphics, They are great with fantastic details on the planes and great effects like seeing empty shell casings spilling from the wing guns on strafing runs and vapour trails from wing tips. There are also detailed ground units including tanks, half tracks etc all this adds to the highly polished feel to the game. The sound effects are also worth a mention as they are also great with detailed engine sounds and the first time you hear bullets fly past your canopy it almost makes you duck!. I found this game a very enjoyable one and also there are lots of free upgrades and new planes on the offical website and the game also comes with its own mission builder for maximum replay value, And i also think an addon pack has just been released called forgotten battles. So to sum up this game is great! loely graphics great sound effects and bags of gameplay! if you have played games like combat flight simulator and B17 flying fortress then buy this and your onto a winner!. |
