Race Driver: GRID (PC DVD)
|
|
|
| Description:
As the all-new racing experience from Codemasters Studios, creators of Colin McRae: DiRT, Race Driver: GRID is all about the race. Every moment from the adrenalin rush at the start lights to the elation at the chequered flag - the tension, pressure, noise, and action. Featuring only the most powerful race cars - current and classic, circuit and drift - players will compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships and then go beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, through to road events and urban street races. With races crammed with action and incident, high-impact moments will come at you thick and fast, one right after another: engine blows, tyre blow outs, tight overtaking, accidents, opponent cars flipping, spinning, collisions with other cars and trackside objects. From humble beginnings, earning a few thousand dollars a season, build a feared and respected racing team with a multi-million dollar income and complete at dramatic race locations and dominate a multi-disciplined world of racing. In Europe, race prestige Marques, including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani, on the greatest official race circuits. Enter street competitions and race high-performance V8 muscle cars through iconic U.S. cities including San Francisco, Washington DC and Detroit. In the Far East, Japanese racing culture sets the tone where night races, including Drift racing, take drivers through neon illuminated cities and to outlying mountain roads. As the antithesis of the box-ticking, plodding single-player race game, Race Driver: GRID delivers a diverse career mode in a persistent world of racing that provides each player with a unique experience as their team writes itself into racing folklore.

Extremely poor
(October 02, 2008) |
|
I've had this game for a week and have it running on a PC with windows XP SP3 and using a Logitech Formula Force EX wheel.
Installing the game turned out not to be easy as installation failed a number of times. Although the graphics are quite good the game is virtually unplayable. No matter how I configure the controller and the car, the latter is pretty much uncontrollable and wanders about all over the track. Perhaps if you use an Xbox controller it might work better. If you're into pure racing games I doubt you will enjoy this very much. It's by far the worst example I have ever come across. |

Nice to look at, awful to play

In a nutshell, nice to look at but horrendous to play.
From the offset you're forced to drive cars at the beginning of your career to build up cash for your own team car.
It's something like 10 races before you can even afford to modify your own car. Fair enough, learn to drive the cars and get a feel of the game, but...
These cars radically change in set-up and style which means from one to drive to the next is wholly inconsistent, and you find yourself crashing out of races and having to restart A LOT.
Some may argue this is "realism" and teaches you proper braking and gear shifting but all it adds upto is a huge learning curve and boredom.
In one race you're car's handling is tight and nifty, in another touching an inch of grass will make you skid off (PRESS RESTART) or a slight shunt from a rival (who by the way never seems to suffer from engine failure or ludicrous spins) puts you out the game (PRESS RESTART).
I grew bored of restarting and even retiring to just move onto another race. Basically you get no feel of achieveing anything.
Also the commentary is out of sync, one minute you're been told the shunt you just had left nothing but a paint scratch, but your on screen display tells you your steering is shot to pieces (PRESS RESTART).
Waste of money and straight onto ebay, and I honestly feel sorry for the sucker who buys it off me.
Codemasters (and Microsoft), you have truly took the mick releasing such a tedious if attractive looking game, never agian will I buy one of your games.....PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART...PRESS RESTART....... |

This game is almost unplayable. Fantastic looks are let down by awful handling and gameplay. One to miss. |

A great looking game - with lots of racing options and a huge BUT - the combination of controls and the underlying game race sim are hugely frustrating. It's neither fully arcade or a more reallistic sim - and it suffers for falling between the 2 stools. I have had the game for a week - and really persevered with it - but I've now had enough and it's coming off my hard-drive.
The problem is the control when racing, it's extremely difficult to maintain control of the car - and the usual is the end up swaying from side to side crashing into either side of the barrier. To begin with I put it down to my driving style, and tried to correct it by balancing throttle/brake more (After all, flooring it when in a turn should spin you out in some of the cars on offer here) - but it's nowhere near as simple as that. There are options for setting the sensitivity of the steering (linear, dead zone, saturation etc) and sure - you can find a balance there, but I'm finding that I am permanently having to correct the steering to keep a straightish line - and on a lot of car/course combos I'm finding it near impossible. I just cannot race competatively on even the Basic setting.
Now - I'm no racing noob either - I have played the TOCA games and the likes of Rally Championship, as well as my all time favourite - GT Legends, I'm used to more accurate driving models, but I'm pulling my hair out with this game - I cannot find the right balance of playing technique / settings to get anything from it.
It seems others have had a great time with it - i have had only frustration. |
