Lucas Classic Line: Star Wars Episode 1 Racer (PC)
|
|
|
| Description:
Let's just for a second forget that Star Wars: Episode I, Racer has anything at all to do with the film on which it's based. Would it still have any appeal if you take away the movie license? The answer, almost surprisingly, is yes. This sci-fi arcade racing game is packed with high-speed thrills and a unique style of track-circling action that should get any racing fan's adrenaline pumping. The game is based on the pod-racing scene from Episode I, which was arguably the best and most exciting segment of the film. Players enter a series of pod races as either Anakin Skywalker or one of his 20 different alien rivals--including Sebulba once you get far enough into the game to unlock this bonus character. Races are linked in four different circuits, each more difficult than the last. The highest circuit, in fact, can be extremely tough. Each race is a white-knuckled ride on the wild side, as the game does an excellent job of conveying a feeling of ferocious speed. It helps that Racer utilises spectacular 3-D graphics to depict the racetracks and their alien surroundings. But racers can't waste time admiring the scenery: tracks are not always well marked and it's all too easy to get lost and fly off the track. As with most Star Wars games, the sound effects and music in Racer are top-notch. True, Anakin's cutesy voice can be annoying at times, but the other racers sound great when they complain as you pass them on the track. Watto the shopkeeper, the floating alien guy who sells new parts and upgrades for your pod, is a great character who chatters away humorously as you shop his store. Overall, Racer is a game that can easily stand on its own merits rather than ride the coattails of Star Wars: Episode I. Intense speed, unique racing action and excellent 3-D graphics make this one a sure-fire winner. --Michael E Ryan

Star Wars : Episode One Pod Race
(November 27, 2005) |
|
Love this game I must say. Have only just started playing it again, having recently got Windows XP Do download the patches otherwise the game won't work on XP. One annoying thing I have found is that the times you set are not saved, even though the fact you've completed the tracks is recorded, the fastest times are not saved between terminating one session and beginning another. Only 1 gripe though, otherwise this is a great game. |

Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
(July 11, 2004) |
|
Star Wars Epsiode 1 Racer (released september 1999)is an old time classic racing game featuring ALL the podracers from its official movie licsense film Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace.SWE1R (star wars episode 1 racer) has over 21 different tracks on 8 unique worlds and over 21 unlockable opponents with each opponents skills and atributes unique. One of the most striking aspects of the game are the beautifuly structured tracks and the clever variety and difference of each ones setting. From racing under the oceans,to tropical jungles or from deserts to floating structures in the sky,the thrilling tracks are one of the most rewarding experiences of this game. The games full on 3D graphics are sharp and crisp and make the game look very realistic. But perhaps the most exciting feature of the game is the ability to buy your podracer parts from prize money and customise its atributes to your disire. The game is naturaly structured to take the player from the easiest courses right the way through the game to the most difficult courses while buying podracer parts from winnings in the process to make your pod faster, and more responsive ready for the harder races. With responsive contols, and realism combined with many fun aspects and challenges makes SWE1R a golden oldie. All in all it is a great game that will appeal to older children and most certainly star wars fans. |

Multiplayer favourite!
(February 25, 2004) |

As another reviewer states, download the patches for XP from the lucasarts website "support.lucasarts.com/trg/xp/xptitle.htm" and this thing really flies. Given that it was written for Windows95 era hardware it's no surprise to see this thing really shifts on the latest adapters and is breathtaking, wire the sound up to your 5.1 and it feels even better than the arcade version, especially since ... The multiplayer mode over IPX allows head-to-head racing on multiple computers over a network, more than just the two you get in the arcades. The multiplayer setup is a breeze if a little quirky. Makes those other karting games look boring by comparison.... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED EVEN IN 2004.... |

Finally a game I can finish- without cheats!
(April 30, 2003) |
|
To begin with this game is a lot of fun, the scenes in the movie were very exciting, and playing the game recreates that at least to a certain extent. It is an interesting feature to race different courses and tournaments and trade for new parts, but somehow the game is just too easy. Usually I am terrible at games, but I found I could win all the races in this one straight away. Obviously this makes for a short shelf life. Well, I suppose it boosted my self esteem for a while. |

fast reflexes needed
(February 28, 2003) |

Star wars episode 1 was released some time ago but the pod racer scene on which this game is based still remains a favourite of mine. If you down load the two patches available on the support.lucasarts.com web site the game runs without problems on Windows XP. Without these patches the game will hang but then it was developed before the days of Windows XP. The game itself is fast and furious. You can select from different podracers and feel the difference in the driving experience. The first few tracks are straight forward to get you on the winning track. You accumulate Trugets for finishing in the top positions which you need to buy enhancements to your podracer to improve your speed, braking, cooling, turning ability etc. As the tracks get more difficult you will need to plan your upgrades to keep up with the competition. Overall a fun and exciting PC game that will appeal to Star Wars fans. |
