An all-time instant classic.

I first got this game with the sidewinder joystick, bundled with our first computer we bought in 1997. I loved the game so much, I completed it several times. I wish I could still play it today, however there are issues on more modern machines.
What I really loved about this game was how well it immersed you into the story line and threw you into the 70's, packed with funk, powerful cars and big big guns :D And of course, the groovy soundtrack which you could never get bored of.
I especially loved the damage system in this game. Although not that sophisticated, it was very good in its time. For instance, you do damage to your wheels, engine, suspension, brakes, outer armour, chassis, and even your weapons. Obviously taking damage in these different areas caused different effects to your vehicle. It was a shame this idea was taken out in Interstate '76's unworthy successor, Interstate '82, whereby your car just had one bar of health. Pfft.
Catchy phrases and even poems just add to the feel of the game. Just ask Taurus whilst you're cruising through the desert plains of Texas, on the lookout for creepers. ;)
So the graphics are blocky and mountains are triangles. We don't care. Interstate '76 easily makes a place as one of my favourite games of all time, and there is no other car-shooter that can beat it, or ever will. Unless Activision re-discover that spark ;) |

A true classic

When I was younger I remember spending nights on end playing this game round my mates. I would say this was one of the greatest games of all time, along with Doom and sim-city it is probably one of the reasons I now wear glasses! Seriously though, this game has everything, fast cars, big guns and pretty good AI. Ok the graphics may not be up to todays standards, but name one other game that lets you put 4 different sized wheels on the same car. By this game now. |
