in response to the message about the direct x error on level 2, i also experienced this problem and after much confering with the sold out tech support i discovered the issue is down to amd based systems, it runs fine on pentium based systems but not amd ones |

Two of the most fun driving games to see the light of day

Both Carmageddon 2 and TDR 2000 work without problems on Windows XP with Service Pack 2, which is a good thing since I love 'em both!
Both feature a structure of free-range races (where you can just drive around and do whatever you like), intersperced with driving-based missions to test your skills. TDR 2000 has the more even dificulty curve, and much more modern graphics, but Carmageddon 2 is still a worthwhile play thanks to its simple point-and-kill interface.
If you feel constricted by having to stick to the track and not run people over in traditional racing games, or if you love the movie Death Race 2000, this pack is for you! |

Buyer beware

I was pleased to find this pack, as I had played and enjoyed Carmageddon 1 and 2 on the Mac. TDR 2000 was never released for Mac, so I was looking forward to my first taste of the third incarnation. Unfortunately there were problems. Carmageddon 2 refused to work at all on my Dell XPS laptop. TDR 2000 ran fine until I tried the second race - the first mission, as it turned out. The game crashed with a DirectX error number and the only way to play the missions is to run with software rendering, which makes for a distinctly 1980s gaming experience. The game advises a minumum of DirectX 7. I wonder if, in fact, that's a maximum; it seems anything newer causes problems. I can find no useful advice on the web, other than running in software mode. Also, the custom car skins feature crashes the game in either rendering mode, without explanation. Unless you have an older machine and OS, I would advise you to put the money towards a newer game. |
