Thief 2
|
|
|
| Description:
Eidos and Looking Glass Technologies advance the shifty gaming style they introduced in Thief: The Dark Project as they continue the adventures of Garrett the master thief. In Thief II, Garrett faces tough times. Machines and their Mechanist creators have emerged as the new sinister force in the city, replacing the Hammerites of the original game. Initially unconcerned with these mechanical abominations, Garrett sets out to pilfer enough to make his next rent payment when he makes a startling discovery: someone is trying to kill him. With thoughts of financial troubles set aside, Garrett must find out who is trying to eliminate him--and why. Through 15 gruelling missions, you lead Garrett through the shadows as you attempt to accomplish a variety of intriguing objectives. In one scenario, you'll be trying to frame an innocent man by planting evidence, while in another you'll have to break into a heavily guarded bank. All the while, you will rely on moss arrows, water arrows, flash bombs, and invisibility potions to get you past the city watch as well as the Mechanists and their walking iron beasts. The gameplay in Thief II is very much like that of its predecessor: Garrett is forced to rely on stealth and cunning rather than brute force. Each successive mission will put those stealth skills to an even tougher test than the last, as you try to slip past a seemingly endless array of guards, traps, robotic sentries, and innocent bystanders. You'll certainly get your money's worth, as each mission can easily take an hour or two to complete. Essentially, Thief II is everything the original Thief was and more. Better graphics, superb mission design, and even better virtual thievery make Thief II a must-have for fans of the original and for any action enthusiast who is tired of the same old shoot-'em-up theme. --Michael E. Ryan Pros: - Excellent level and mission design
- Great graphics
- Cool array of tools to make any thief's life easier
- Challenging missions that will last 1 to 2 hours each
Cons: - Some missions incredibly difficult
- No multiplayer

THIEF II
(June 03, 2001) |
|
This game is so atmospheric, and creepy - in fact, it's the most terrifying game I've ever played (twice as scary as Undying). It really does make you jump out of your skin when you're happily stealing something from a dark and gloomy house and you hear a voice just outside saying 'If anybody's in there, I've just blocked the only way out. The problem with this game is that it's way too hard. The first mission you're not allowed to kill anybody - but there's about a hundred people running at you with swords! Final Score: 70% Genuinely scary, but too long. |

Buy it!

Played the first one ? Doesn't matter, this game introduces you to a new genre in gaming "Sneak em ups" - remember when you were a kid playing 40 40/Pom pom 123 or whatever you called it ? One of you stays at base and counts, the rest of you run off and hide then he/she comes and looks for you, they gotta find you before you get back to base. Remember the adrenalin ? you are the best, you hide for a bit then sneak around, dodging behind trees and walls, walking in the shadows, trying not to breathe too heavily - remember that ? Well this game relives those years but in an adult world. You take on the role of Garret trained in the arts of stealth he rebels from his sect and decides he is better suited to the life of a thief. Based very much in the middle ages but with that steam-cyber punk attitude - Buy this game, load it up, turn out the lights and get sucked into probably the cleverest most atmospheric game of the year so far! |

Not quite perfect?
(July 31, 2000) |

Yes, it's brilliant... it's wonderful to have involving first person action without having to storm about shooting everything that moves, and it is involving... you duck, lean, crouch, whisper, sometimes jump out of your seat while playing it. It isn't perfect though... sometimes 3D objects overlap in space (a guard behind a door with his hand passing through the wall, or a piece of paper sticking out of the wood of the table) and sometimes the enormous number of keyboard controls make it finger knotting (or just impossible) - and can you remember them all in a crisis? Nevertheless, highly recommended. |

A great sequel, with some minor flaws.

Thief II is a great game. It improves upon Thief: The Dark Project immensely. Looking Glass studied the feedback received from the original and crafted a game that fitted most player's expectations. Gone are the hordes of zombies that were the bane of Thief I. Instead Garrett has some new adversaries in the form of powerful metal robots. Getting into a fight with one of these is certain death: thus forcing you to be stealthy. All textures are 16-bit, banishing that 8-bit 'washed-out' look of the original. The new zoom function of Garrett's robotic eye is a fun tool to play around with, and a remote camera can be used in missions to get a glimpse of unknown terrain. The missions are much larger and tougher than those in the first and will have you thinking about every next move. Overall, a terrific sequel. |
