A real tactical shooter
(July 25, 2007) |

I got this game several years ago and thought it was good. Now I think it is exceptionally good, every game I have played since then has had worse or comparable gameplay and graphics, I still use RvS as benchmark for other FPS games.
The game uses the UT2 engine, only requiring a modest computer to run yet providing significantly better graphics than other games at the time and still acceptable graphics today. Additionally all the usual Unreal cheats work (in single player mode).
Moving onto gameplay, forget Counter-Strike's "tactical shooter" tag, RvS is much more in depth and realistic. There are loads of weapons and accessories to choose from. You can select AI controlled team members to support you, and "change players" to where they are on the map at the press of a key. I think the game still has some value to the less patient players, there are some presaved "loadouts" to let you jump into the game quickly.
There is online and network gameplay, although probably less servers today than a few years ago. You can play all the single player missions and single player "terrorist hunt" side games as co-op or you can play a variation of deathmatch, defusal and VIP like in CS1.6 against an opposing team.
I liked the multiplayer versions of the single player missions the best, it's fun to see how fast you can clear a level, especially when you have other good players playing with you. You may find co-op mode repetitive, or even frustrating if you are a bad player and die a lot, in which case you may prefer Counter-Strike for its simplicity and much shorter round times. |

Tactical combat at it's very best, outstanding graphics, real world weapons, absorbing planning, superior multiplayer. If you get war weary, just plan the actions of your teams, and then observe them faithfully obey your orders in the spectator mode.Even the training missions are outstanding. The plot of the single player action is a little weak, but that just holds the game together while you enjoy the action. |
