| Description:
The sequel to the original adventures of Garrett the thief, Thief 2: The Metal Age once again sees our stealthy anti-hero trying to uncover the evil doings of a sinister cabal of technology users and find out more about his purpose. From the outset you realise that this isn't just another first-person shooter, here all-out violence is more likely to get you killed and it's much better to avoid conflict than seek it. As well as this twist you get a fantastic narrative story, brilliant mission design and some really immersive gameplay. Your priority is to stay unnoticed as you go about accomplishing your objectives within each scenario. Garrett can stand very still, and becomes effectively invisible if he stands in darkness. He's easier to detect if he draws his weapons or moves around, and even when he can't be seen he can still be heard if he makes a lot of noise. You can gauge just how noisy you are by listening to your footsteps echoing around the corridors, and how visible you are by means of a colour-coded gem. Like its predecessor, Thief 2 also sounds incredible, plug in your earphones and immerse yourself in the atmospheric ambient sound and first-rate voice acting also brings the game to life. The cynical Garrett is never at a loss for smart remarks, but he knows when to be silent so that he can listen to the guards bantering, religious fanatics whistling hymns, and more. Of further note, Garrett's inhuman enemies, including all manner of undead and man-beast hybrids, sound positively terrifying. Still, sneaking and climbing around won't be enough to keep Garrett out of trouble; so he is armed with a sword, blackjack, and bow. But the emphasis is on subduing the enemy before they even know he's there rather than all out combat. But Garrett's most versatile tool must be his bow. As with most every play mechanic in the game, archery in Thief strikes the perfect balance of great control and just enough realism. Thief 2: The Metal Age is one of the most atmospheric games that you can play. It looks great, sounds fantastic and offers a real antidote to hack and slash action.--Uris Headley

Didn't get on with this game at all.

I couldn't get into this game at all. I never even got past the first level - there were so many different keys controlling different things I couldn't get my head round it all! I think once you get the hang of the controls it would be a good game, but I never got that far. I also found that it was quite hard to understand what your aim was, and were you were supposed to go and what you were supposed to do. |

Every aspect of Thief 2 is excellent. From its thrilling, heart racing sneakaround adventures, its excellent comedy in the form of its guards, graphics, gameplay, originality, and plot. The original Thief game was also that good on every way, yet Thief 2 expands somewhat in its scope, with bigger and more complex missions and the furthering of certain aspects of plot and technicalities in gameplay. The only criticism I have of Thief 2 as compared to Thief is that it loses much of the gothic, medieval tone which for me was a big booster in the atmosphere of the original. Though the vanishing of the `Olde Worlde' in favour of The Metal Age, is covered in the story of Thief 2, for me this does detract from the enjoyment a little. That said it is still a stunning experience and an absolute joy to play. |

Gaming excellence.........you can only love this game

I am a late bloomer in the Thief market having only seen a demo earlier in the year. I finally got myself a copy and life as I knew it was a distant memory. Hours and hours down the road I cannot get enough. The game throws conventional gaming on its head and asks you to use your head. An extremely pleasant change from the normal first person violence you normally have to put up with. The storyline has you involved from the start with a very engaging plot. You are a expert thief in a tough, uncomprimising environment which requires all your skills to conquer. You need a good sound environment as sound is your food and drink. Every noise is important and I sometimes get so involved in plot with the surreal music that I am on the edge of my seat in the midnight hours. Midnight hours...yes and get used to it as this is like a bestseller....you cannot put it down. The movement and graphics are great especially if you have a P3 or better with 128mb ram plus a good 3D card (required) and sound card. Levels are well planned and allow you to improve as you go along. Tip : if you have not played Thief 1 :The Dark Project then I would start with that as it teaches you well and makes your transition to Thief 2 pretty seamless. All in all a superb piece of software and will leave nobody disappointed. I have no real qualms with the game except loading times which are quite long but in no way detract from the game. Thief 3 is apparently on the way.....I dont know how they will better it but I cannot wait. Buy it now ... you will get hours and hours of top flight gaming. |

I recommened Theif 2 without a shadow of a doubt, the graphics are excellent, the gameplay even better. The game creates this amazing world around you brimming with a deep atmosphere. Unlike FPS, Theif 2 makes you think about everything and anything, and keeps you playing "just a little bit more". Your'll definately be back for more for a long time with this game. Excellent. Buy it now.. |
