not everyone can enjoy this game
(April 02, 2007) |

I bought this game because i couldn't believe how the critics were so bad when the video demos of the game were so promising. Also because it was pretty cheap. anyway, everything bad you read about this game is true and thats why i love this game so much. there is almost no storyline, the characters are empty, the whole game is pretty much the same from start to end, but frankly i have been waiting for a game like this for a while now because i feel that they don't make good, old fashion, mindless, gory action games anymore.
bottom line: this isn't half-life 2; but if you want to shut down your brain for a while and kill hundreds of giant spiders as fast as you can you won't be disappointed |

Great Game
(December 23, 2006) |

i read other reviews for this and was a little skeptical, however my curiousity made me buy it and im glad i did. Although i just bought a new computer i was a little worried that it wouldnt be able to handle this game (reading from others) however i had no problem playing the game, it did freeze for like 5 seconds at 1 part but thats about it.
The game is really good,i usually get bored with most fps because of a long drawn out story when all i wanna do is shoot and kill (after all it is a first person shooter). i found that shooting at a load of bugs is really satisfying (difficult at times, when like 20 bugs rush u at once, but satifying none the less) and great fun! and a great change from other fps! |

Would you like to know more...?

After reading all the mixed reviews below, I was very apprehensive about buying this. I loved the first film and have was excited at the prospect of a Starship Troopers FPS game. I bought it after seeing it new for £2.50 from a third party seller.
I was pleasantly surprised when I got the game running as a lot of reviewers had mentioned it requires a monster PC to run, but on my modest PC (Athlon 3000+, 1GB ram, nVidia 6600GT) I was able to have most of the graphical settings on high, bar the resolution an shadow disabled.
As far as the gameplay goes, the majority of the action involves getting to certain 'checkpoints' to lay bombs, power up facilities, rescue some stranded general etc. Of course whilst doing this you have to contend with LOTS of those nasty over-sized, man-eating insects. These come in many varieties based on the movies and some new ones thrown in (cliff mounted bugs act as gun turrets, glowing bugs to alert warriors to you location). All of the bugs are well animated and move and react very much like the films. Graphically, models all look good, the textures on the insects look realistic with shiny bump-mapped exo-skeletons. The scenery however, whilst covered in bump and texture-maps, has a low poly count, making things look very angular in places. I assume this was done to allow for the large number of bugs which attack. The developers have done a good job of recreating the feel of the film.
Sonically, the game does quite well: music from and inspired from the films accompanies most of the action, changing to match what is happening on screen. The sound effects are also good, rifle fire sounds suitably clunky, giving a feel for the power in the weapons. Bugs screech, marines scream an yell when attacked etc.
The main problems I found whilst playing is the lack of a proper story and the constant onslaught of bugs can get tiresome. However, it is a game you can pick up for 20 minutes, blast a few hundred bugs and walk away feeling very satisfied.
And you can't really go wrong for £2.50 |

NO NO NO!!!

I really thought this game was going to be good. I thought "finally, a game made from a movie that doesn't stink". I was wrong.
Graphically, its terrible. The characters are plain, blocky and reminiscent of late 90's games. The bugs DO look fairly good, but even on a high end PC the slowdown when there are dozens of them around (forget about 'thousands of bugs', its never more than maybe 100 or 150) is painful. The scenery is plain and simple, and uninteresting.
The sound in this game is limited. The voice acting is very poor, the weapons sound sweet enough, but the bug noises are repetitive and not at all creepy.
Forget sound and vision for a bit, woeful though they may be, lets talk gameply. It is UNBELIEVABLY repetitive. Go here, kill alot of stuff on the way, blow something up. The game is terrible with timing; sometimes you need to wait for a bombing run or some other event, and your are just WAITING and WAITING for ten minutes or so, all the while facing hoardes of bugs with a diminishing arsenal. It also takes forever to kill boss bugs. You can tangle with a royal warrior or even the baby plasmas for upwards of 15 minutes if luck is not with you. 8 minutes is probably the least time it would take to take out a royal warrior.
The story is very poor, also. Videos are simply cut from the movie, even though this game is not taking place during the movies timeline, or even on the same planet. Its just go here, blow this up, kill this. Why? Cos we said so. Also, wait 10 minutes for me to open this door for you.
I would avoid this unless you can pick it up very cheap, or simply CANNOT live another minute without recreating that defending the fort scene from the movie... |

Serious Gaming Systems

I have just purchased this game due to all the reviews on here, I know that sounds crazy but hear me out, I have just got a new machine and I was wondering if it could handle this game (see below for computer spec). Dual 3800 Athalon 64 Processors 2 x Asus 6800GT SLI graphics cards 7200 rpm Maxtor 16mb cache Hard Drive Sound Blaster 4 Sound Card A8N SLI-Deluxe Mother Board View Sonic 19” VX924 Monitor PRE WARNING I did update the game before I played it, the patch was a massive 220mb, which isn’t too bad if you have 2mb broadband (took approx 1hr and ½) but I feel sorry for you if you have a 56k modem it will take ages to download. Settings I run the game on I put them on to high or highest with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 at 60mhz. I must admit it my system did handle it very well no slow down to speak of, the only time I had slight slow down (I mean a very slight slow down) is when the swarm of 1000’s of bugs attack. One bug (no pun intended) I did find with the game play for some reason when I was fighting a giant bug the sound would get a slight crackle but went soon after and I haven’t had it since? Game play is pretty good and some very large and quite difficult bugs to kill, but the level design is linear and the weapons are pretty bog standard stuff. Pre-mission you have short clips from each of the films that help to set up the whole experience and feel of the game, but understand most the game play doesn’t follow the plot of the films. On the whole not a bad game the 1000’s of bugs feature is pretty impressive and a sign of things to come by the looks of it, this actually be quite intimidating when you are standing on a gun emplacement with only another half a dozen grunts manning an outpost and you hear the rumble of all the enemies baring down on you, if you have the system to handle it and you like the films, its worth a look. |
