F.E.A.R: Extraction Point Expansion Pack (PC DVD)
|
|
|
Description:
In a nutshell: The world's scariest first person shooter makes a return with an expansion packed filled with more ghostly apparitions and gun fetishism than you could ever want. The lowdown: Despite having some of the best graphics and artificial intelligence of any recent first person shooter, as well as the creepiest atmosphere, the original F.E.A.R. didn't do nearly as well as it deserved. This expansion offers a second chance to see what you were missing with a story that picks up immediately from the end of the original game as you try to escape the destruction of the Origin Facility. The expansion doesn't really add much that is new beyond a few new weapons (including some super useful sentry guns) and enemies (such as a giant walking tank) and it is rather short but it's still got the best gunfights in the business. Most exciting moment: Despite the Japanese horror influenced atmosphere, the best thing about F.E.A.R. is just how intelligent your enemies are. They'll constantly try to outflank and outmanoeuvre you and many times you'll only be saved by the use of your essential bullet time ability. In the end it's your intelligent opponents you fear the most, not the virtual ghosts. Since you ask: The reason that there are no new multiplayer options in the game is that a free update has already been released called F.E.A.R. Combat. In an unusually generous move you can download it for nothing from the F.E.A.R. website at www.joinfear.com. The bottom line: More of the same of one of the most underrated shooters of last year.-HARRISON DENT

more of the same

as the title says, this game is pretty much more of the same of the original fear. which in one way is not a bad thing. hell no the graphics gameplay are just as brilliant as the original game. the downside of this game is that, many of the effects used in the original fear to make you jump, are repeated. so if you've completed the original you may already be aware and know what to expect this time around cause not much has changed. by far the best bit in this game, and im not trying to be sadistic but its to see how things pan out, and how your team mates errr well, what they get up to.
the storyline is a bit baffling, the quote 'i know it doesnt make sense, not much does nowadays' sums up the plot. which is a bit of a let down from the brilliant first encounter. plus some of the levels are similar, with the 'oh no its locked we'll have to find a way around' attitude a very common affair. plus the level in the multi storey carpark, is well the same as the one in the original, except backwards (your making your way down the car park instead of up) hence the four stars
the addition of new weapons, new enemies is a pretty good move, i was shocked when i got shot at by one of them, it is an awesome weapon, but i'll let you find it so i dont spoil the fun.
overall not as good as the original, but the original was absoluetly brilliant so this one is still as good a fps as any on the market. its i a stonkingly good game. highly recommended. |

Just as Moffat said....

I'm an avid FPS fan and have been since they began all those years ago.
I loved F.E.A.R. i thought it was wonderful, it had the weapons, the levels and the atmosphere unlike recent shooters and so when i heard this was coming i waited....
It arrived on Friday and by Saturday i had completed it. It didn't take too long just two longish sessions and that was it.
It's got everything that F.E.A.R. has plus more, newer weapons, newer enemies and more of the same atmosphere and it's one of those things that if you're running an SLI config you're glad you are so you can turn everything up.
But it's too short, far too short, annoyingly short and i wonder why it took so long to create for just a few days worth of play.
The ending is another one like the original where you think, oh i see, another expansion is coming and i hope that it's really worth the wait as i want to know what's happened.
So all in all if you've played the original then pick this up for this price but don't expect to be occupied for long.
Lovely to look at, lovely to play just not long enough.

I have to say this game impressed me, it has amazing features, such as: the new weapons, bad guys and more crazy stuff that scares the hell outa ya, however as im sure that in the original FEAR you were dissapointed with the ending, well with Extraction point you are left again dissapointed, you still dont find out the main point of the story and are yet again left gutted. i completed this game in under 10 hours. but don't let that put you off the game content is very good, i just can't begin to describe how annoyed i was with the ending!!!!! |

Rehashed but still enjoyable

"Cheaper to go to the cinema sadly ." Not true! It costs me £7.50 just for a ticket at my cinema so ha!
Err...anyway.
The original F.E.A.R provided us with a massively exciting, fairly pant-shredding experience and Extraction Point delivers no less. Unfortunately, it also delivers no more. As many other reviewers have noted, this expansion really is just insufficiently different from the original to be classed as an actual expansion. Maybe if they had made this into a free download and called it a developers mod then I would have no quibbles.
Points to note would include the mild pointlessness of the very few "New" weapons, which, as also noted, seem to be torn straight out of other classic first-person shooters as unreal and quake, as well as the essentially similar level design. Although some improvement has been made in this area with the introduction of a few new environments, much of the game is still played out in repetitive industrial complexes which do become tedious, very easily.
Another problematic area of this expansion is that, in the original F.E.A.R, we managed to discover who the girl was and how she became that way. After that ensemble of information, there isn't much story left to deliver, which means that Extraction point is lowered to the level of a simple Run and Gun operation.
Don't be too dismayed however. It's not all bad. The game is still great fun to play. With intelligent enemies, decent graphics, a lot of laughs and a couple of spooks, Extraction Point will surely entertain. At least for the duration, which in itself, admittedly, doesn't say very much, GIVEN the duration.
At around about 5 hours of gameplay, Extraction point really is too short to warrant it's original price tag of £20, but let's face it, even with it's flaws, it's still a good yarn, while it lasts of course. |

Get ready to be afraid!

Just finished this. It's scary because of the sounds they put in the game along with the half invisible things that just appear then run away. Personally I was way more scared the first time I played Resident Evil 2 on my ps1 all those years ago.
But saying that, there are some moments in this when my scalp just prickled and I started sweating. It's all to do with the sound, but after a while I became numb to it and I'm sure you will too. You still feel the scary feeling, but you just run and gun through it anyway.
That girl who looked like she's from "The Ring" didnt scare me, but the zombie things coming out the screaming fire was one of those prickly scalp moments.
Its worth playing just to see if you get scared, but as a FPS, it wasn't my cup of tea. Sorry, but I guess i'm just not into shooting monsters anymore. |
