Doom 3 (PC)
|
|
|
| Description:
The long awaited release of Doom 3 sees it claiming two of gaming's highest accolades: that of having the best graphics ever seen and of being the scariest video game ever made. The question of graphics seemed a pretty open and shut case from the moment the game was announced--this is the first new title from legendary developers iD Software since Quake III: Arena and as such it features completely new graphics technology. The reason the game is likely to win the Dr Who award for behind the sofa gaming is in the way it chooses to use its awesome new graphical power. The game's storyline is a loose remake of the first Doom game (from way back in 1993) but the style of gameplay is actually radically different. This is more like a first person Resident Evil than anything else, with corpses lunging out at when you least expect it and monsters scattering their innards all over the place whenever you introduce them to the business end of your shotgun. In actual fact though it's not the graphics that are the most disturbing aspect of the game but the sound, with every unknown noise ratcheting the tension up so much that by the time a monster actually does appear it's almost a relief to tangle with them. Doom 3 is not for the faint hearted and that's not a warning to be taken lightly--anyone keen on wearing oversized women's shirts will have a coronary within minutes. But for everyone else this is exactly what the doctor ordered. --David Jenkins

A spectacular but flawed epic
(August 27, 2008) |
|
And it has taken me 4 years to get past the flaws to the fantastic game beneath, as during that time I gave up regularly. Subtract 1 star for each of the problems that could cause you an issue below.
1) Minimum spec - I have a PC that can at last run this on ultra detail without any performance issues at all and it looks amazing. My previous PC's only managed high and the frame rate in combat was poor, so I gave up. Unless you have a machine that can handle it in ultra (dual core, powerful graphics card), the way it should be seen, wait until you do as the frame rate drop when you are being attacked can be appalling.
2) It's too dark - yes, I know it's meant to be that way, but not being able to see anything or what is attacking you isn't fun and just ends up being frustrating. I played with the duct tape mod which gives you a light on the shotgun and rifle therefore allowing you to see what is attacking you and also fire back at the same time, without it I doubt I still would have finished this and never would. The torch is useless and despite colonising Mars humans still have no ability to have hands free lighting in the year 2145. Other games gave us night vision or flares, Id gave us the ability to only use a gun or torch, not both.
3) Monster spawning - the most annoying and poorly conceived spawning system in any FPS I have ever seen. Most waves are triggered by reaching a set point trigger and as monsters can teleport in you can be surrounded in an empty room in seconds. Also monsters teleporting in on top of you and right in front/behind with no chance to react in some instances. Walls also frequently disappear as you have walked past them to let another monster attack unseen, why build monster storage cupboards into the facility? Finally there is the extremely dull `monster waiting behind unopened door', boring and predictable.
So either a 5 star game or down to a poor 2 star, you decide, but if you have the PC to play it and persevere you should see why it is a 5 and still well worth getting hold of a copy.

Mind-blowing game with super graphics!
(June 10, 2008) |

This game has supberb graphics, as well as excellent AI and general playability. Doom 3 has raised the bar in gaming technology and performance that even 2008 would be proud to replicate. |

Fun, but much the same (same ol same ol) in most levels
(December 29, 2007) |
|
I've only played part of the game, but I've noticed that much of the game is "navigate, kill, navigate, kill", thru interior tunnels. This is way too "old timey" for me to truly give it the whole 5 stars. (The 4 stars are mainly because of the great graphics) :) |

DOOMED
(December 06, 2007) |

Dont play this game on your own in the dark!!! possibly the ultimate FPS. There is no plot to speak of, just kill them before they kill you. Wonderfully apmospheric and scary it can make you physically jump in your seat.I got to the point that did not want to open another door for fear of what might be behind it. The graphics if played on a reasonable pc are very good with great sound to boot. For price that the game is now selling for you cannot go wrong.Even a couple of years on Doom 3 still looks like a new game. |
