Let the WAAAAAARRRRSSS Begin!!!!!
(April 13, 2007) |

I was playing this on my laptop, which really couldn't handle anything other than the studio. In the rooftop and underground I found my PC too unresponsive. So Point No.1 - you need a desktop to play AND one with plenty of graphics and processing power. OK, that over with, it is SO MUCH better than Arenas Of Destruction and more realistic (to a point). I agree with many points already made that the house robots are too fast especially Sir Killalot. Yes, it is great fun too when they go up in the air, but COME ON!! Only Chaos 2 could flip a house robot!! And it is daft when the house robots drive into the pit - they would NEVER DO THAT!! I even managed to immobilise Dead Metal by flipping him with Wheely Big Cheese. So that is a questionable point. Related to this, and maybe this is because I was playing at the standard level, many of the top well-known robots are pretty sub-standard in this game. Razer, for example, can grip you but then you can then just drag him around. Chaos 2 seems slower than normal sometimes. Tornado is the old style Tornado, not the Series 6 winner version. But this is a 2002 game. Right, that's my gripes out the way. I can now say how much I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!! Absolutely BRILLIANT FUN!!! Building your own robot and progressing up the Stages is fantastic. By the way, stick with the dome shape or wedge shape. The battles are GREAT!!! Just what you need after a hard day's slog!!! Not many sound effects other than the music and extreme commentary from Jonathan Pearce. In fact, he does everything, the countdown 3..2..1..activate, CEASE, ROBOTEERS STANDBY and the final result. Could have had the studio voiceover too I think just for completeness. Overall then, a great game, but a bit of fine-tuning on what I've mentioned could make this the ULTIMATE ROBOT BATTLE. Oh, and you have to like the TV series to play it of course. But why buy it otherwise??? |

Not bad, but sound doesn't work properly!

I bought this recently, because I couldn't get enough of Robot Wars. It's an old game (2002), but there's really nothing newer. In a nutshell, here's what I think: PROS: -Good graphics -A good battle can be lots of fun -Easy to install -Lots of battles in single player to unlock the extra robots -Lots to customize your robot with, but you have to unlock them first CONS: -Sound: The commentary and music is there, but once the battle starts, the robots don't make a single sound! (no axe/saw/anything sounds). So big disappointment, I'm running XP and have no idea what the problem is, maybe because this game is several years old, maybe a compatibility issue? (I have the latest patch too). Let's hope this isn't how it's SUPPOSED to be. -Realism: Well, there is major problems with the physics engine. Sir killalot moves like he's a Ferrari, and flys into the air like he weighs 80 KG (when he really weighs 280 KG). The robots in general are too fast (ranging from fast to super fast). Plus the collision detection is questionable, sometimes my robot flips over or flys 5 feet in the air with just a nudge, right off the building. Very annoying. -Damage: In the show, robots sometimes are unreliable, or get immobilized. Not here. You hack and hack away at them until they're just a busted shell and a battery, and they still don't stop. I wish it was more realistic and a few good hits sometimes can immobilize them. -Viewpoints: The camera isn't the greatest, more options would've been helpful -Other: The crowd is laughable, and are completely static. A huge attraction of the TV show is the crazy crowds that get things going. Geez, they could've put a bit more effort into making the crowd at least move their arms or something. Conclusion: Overall a pretty good game for fans of the show. Others will probably be disappointed. Sound is an issue with mine, and I'll try to fix it. What this game really needs is another one, it has potential but just too many flaws, just too unrealistic at times to get a good feel for the show. It would be awesome to bring it up with the latest technology, to really get the Robot Wars experience going. Probably won't happen but there is so much potential. |

Great Fun - especially on two player

There's a steep learning curve at the beginning but it's well worth it. Once you have won a few competitions you will have enough credits to buy a seeded robot like Chaos 2. From then on it's easier and much more fun. On the two player version you can play football, sumo, collateral damage, head to head, annihilator etc. It is brilliant! The graphics are good and the gameplay is smooth. All in all a good egg. |

When i saw this game i thought it qould be quite good, i hoped for quite an improvement from AoD, there isnt really. Sure the graffics are good. But it can be awkward to control the robots, the damage is unrealistic, and i find it almost impossable to flip robots over, they either just get lifted or go flying up into the air spinning stupidly fast land the right way up or bounce the right way up. Although my robots seem to flip quite easily, and can flip over from just being pushed. The refbot is rubbish he drives into you and flips you over, the same with the house robots, they come out the CPZs way too much and when they do they can quite easily flip your robot by pushing you, and they are too fast. most of the weapons do little damage aswell so it is rarely possable to win by immobilizing your opponent, you have to get them in a pit or out the arena, or win through judges decision, which is also not very good, u could of taken pretty much no damage, and your opponent could have no armour and be smoking and you can still lose. Overall i expected alot more from this game, it can be fun with sum of the new game types but is very unrealistic, and just not that good. Also on mine i can only play the game by reinstalling the patch everytime i want to play the game, otherwise the game just doesnt load up. |

Sure it's not perfect...... but its still great fun

Yes the commentary lags the fight more often than not. Yes some of the 'competitor' robots (e.g. Pussycat) are uncontrollable. Yes the house robots are annoyingly overeager sometimes and the RefBot often makes things worse rather than better. Despite all that - this is extremely addictive and excellent fun. Thoroughly recommended to any Robot Wars fan. Had no graphics or installation problems. Just lucky I guess. |
