Frustrating!
(February 14, 2008) |
|
Nice looking, but suffers from one extremely annoying flaw. In order to save you need to complete a level. the levels are very long. Guess what happens if you get killed after 99% completion - yep, you have to start all over again. I do not mind this if you only have to redo a small portion of a game, but in this game it gets VERY FRUSTRATING! Add to that the fact you die too easily and this game is a recipe for hair loss - i.e. losing more hair. A quick save would have made all the difference, but... |

Pariah - ''Okay''
(July 24, 2007) |
|
Okay ,, My Specs are as follows
P4 3.2ghz
1gb ddr 533 ram
256 x800 pro
ran like a dream on this spec, now and again did it lag a few times when there was plenty of enemies around. first things first ,, imo this is better then halo, alot better but without its bad side. its only worth playing if you are into single player games and have kinda ran out of good games to play
the good :
nice use of unreal 2 engine here, not bad graphics,
the havok physics are used which is like the HL2 style of physics and i like it alot
not repettive in the mapping
good choice of weapons
the Bad :
there is no self save button so u can only save when u are at a certain part of the map,, can be really annoyin when u die before a save point and have to replay a level
the save points on the game are badly placed, u might not run into a save point for ages but when u dont need to save theres plenty of them around.
the other bad part is that you have watch the cinematics over and over again if u dont reach thast first save part on the level
the story seemed pretty dull (imo)
but i agree with another review this isnt a good nor a bad game ,, worth a try tbh, dont hesitate to think your buyin a bad game, it good for the FPs fan

Pariah - Avoid like the plague? (Thats a pun!)
(May 07, 2006) |
|
Firstly, I see alot of unbalanced reviews here...its not as bad as the bad reviews, and that one particular sparkling review seems to have been written with a vested interest in selling the game.
Anyway, to business. The heart of the first person shooter lies in giving EVERYTHING to the gamer. You can't simply have great gameplay and crap story (Doom 3), or a great story with bad gameplay (Starship Troopers, kinda). Pariah doesn't quite live up to this level of excellence.
Pariah provides a beautiful graphical world to play around in. However, the buildings and other objects are blocky, like 80's sci-fi movie stuff. There's nothing wrong with that I suppose, but this problem is compounded by very enclosed environments, even while outdoors. You always seem to be in a narrow valley. For all the lovely looking graphics (the fog is particularly good), its not that hard to run this game; even mid-range computers should run it okay.
The game sounds good. Above average voice acting, clean and appropriately technological sounds...it works. However, the 3d sound can result in some things becoming very quiet, and others being VERY loud.
Playing Pariah is reasonably fun. The weapons are fairly cool, and the upgrade system adds another dimension to them. However, the variety of weapons is a little sparce - some of them just look the same as well. It must be said - the AI is woeful. 5 guys lined up will just stand there as you sniper all of them. They are NOT clever - no flanking, no grenading to flush you out, nothing. The only thing that makes them dangerous is their number, and that they seem to appear from behind you for no reason. The vehicles are clunky and unimpressive, the gameplay is repetitive (disable turret, open door, go through door, repeat ad nauseum). The game is also very short, that other review says 15-20 hours of gameplay - no WAY! I walked through this in well under ten hours. All that said, its way better than Starship Troopers to play, and honestly it will keep you coming back until you complete the game. Pity that doesn't take long.
This games biggest problem is the truly one-dimensional story, if it may be called that. There is NO character background or development - the extent of my knowledge about the protagonist is that he is a doctor, and fought in a war. Oh, he had a daughter. The second main character is a woman with a virus (hence 'Pariah'); she has this virus, you see, and...thats about it, really. There's a bad guy who's a bad guy for no reason, and the end boss is some other guy. Yep, thats just how shallow it is. The half-a-dozen or so cutscenes explain nothing, other than the fact that there is a virus possibly made by some people call the Shroud (no origin or explanation for them either) who may or may not be living dead (you only meet one), and this virus makes people explode when they die, and sometimes explode and not die for some reason. Its very disorienting - find Karina...ok, got her...cutscene, this should explain some things...oh, no, it didn't, and now I'm on a train, it seems. The story could have been put together in 10 minutes on the back of a placemat, its not clever, it doesn't work and there are GAPING holes. As Shakespeare may say, this be madness, yet there is NO method in it. This seems like a game that was made to display what could be done with an engine, like a display at a convention like e3 or something. There is zero depth.
So, I don't think you should buy this game unless you can pick it up cheap. Also, multiplayer is actually very good (the developers are known for it). You can easily make your own maps with the editor, and although they are small there's a fair amount of variety. Facing some intelligent foes with no need for a story makes the game alright! |

Better than Halo
(February 02, 2006) |
|
This Game is great, not as bad as everyone says it is. it is more or less the same as Halo, but you can create your own online battle field and it isnt as strange as halo. The graphics on it are great. but you need a good computer to play it. i dont know why. my computer isnt very good i only have a 128MB graphic card, 256MB RAM and an AMD DURON CPU chip. and it works perfectly on the best settings. i am only on the second and it proving to be great. easy yet challenging and im on easy mode. this is perfect for anyone who like FPS games. This game dosn't dilly dally about it puts you straight into the action. |

It's not great, but it's not bad either...
(January 04, 2006) |

Certainly not a 'classic' but worth playing for a few hours (it only lasts that long!). The graphics are extremely good although my ageing PC struggled with them and as a result I was unable to run anywhere, only walk (or maybe this was a ploy to double the lenght of the game...?). However, great graphics do not make a great game - gameplay does that and with Pariah that was pretty run of the mill and nothing special. So worth a look if you can't find anything else to get but don't hold out for great excitement. |
