More intrigues of Atrus' family
(September 17, 2006) |
|
Another high rating for another Myst game.
Though unable to beat the complex symbolism and puzzle-integration of Riven, Exile does well as a sequel. The Ages are less linked, but the new 360 degree views allow you to follow characters around the screen, look down at what you're standing on (though your feet are rather unnervingly invisible!), and peer over the edges of railings: something that Riven was sorely lacking despite its stunning scenery.
The old "find the pages" quirk is back, this time for new-character-Saavedro's diary, though not all the pages are needed to complete the game, but all give an emotional insight to the character's mind as do the plot-developmental messages he leaves around the Ages.
The downsides were mainly confined to rather large plot-holes and some tedious wandering back and forth if you were'nt accurate enough at writing it all down, including lengthy 'travelling' cutscenes that lost their brilliance after the hundreth time. |

Problems with crashing on the last world?
(February 04, 2006) |
|
It's worth knowing that earlier versions of the Focus edition of this game had a bug on Disc 3, meaning the final (very short!) world crashed the game. If you email focus multimedia customer services, they'll send you out a replacement disc free of charge. Hope that's useful. |

In response to A gamer From Leeds

I don't know why it crashes on you but I have Windows XP and 3 versions of Exile. The first I got years ago by itself and then I got it on the Myst 10th anniversary edition and the last one I got with my Myst IV Limited Edition. Anyways not a single one of those copies crash on my computer. The only one I have ever had crash is the original Myst and that was due to it wanted an older version of Quicktime. Again I say I have never had it crash in XP. So you might want to have your computer looked at and make sure its not your computer. |

A Must Buy
(February 10, 2005) |
|
Now, to start on the downside, if you are a Windows xp owner, do not purchase this game! I own xp and bought an earlier version of this game at about the time xp was released. There was no mention of xp on the box so i took my chances. Now, a more up to date box has been released for the game, stating it as unsuitable for any xp owner. This was a huge upset to me because my version worked perfectly up until the last age, where it crashes! Very frustrating. On a more positive note, this game is one of the best games I have ever seen and had the pleasure to play. After buying and competing the original Myst, and enjoying it massively, I was hooked. This more recent addition to the franchise though, is even more astonishing. it contains illustrious graphics with tremendous 360 degree rotation in all directions and the haunting music is fantastic and just right for the picture you develop over the time you are playing. There is the usual bad guy, struck into crisis and taking desperate measures, but that's the main storyline, so I won't go into details. The real actors cast for the roles and superimposed into the game are just right, and also plant seeds of realism. And the gameplay is mesmerising and even addictive, keeping me, and hopefully you, engrossed for hours, thinking deeply into the complex game structure. The game takes some working out, but the brilliant animation scenes at the end of each age are worth any amount of effort. Definately worth getting, especially the deep thinkers among us, who like a slower paced, but still thrilling, mental and logical game. If you don't get this game, you'll regret it. |

A beautiful Aladdin's cave of clever puzzles!
(October 15, 2004) |

I've just completed this excellent game and even at the end it throws surprises at you. The graphics, audio and 360 degrees orientation are the best I've ever seen. I am classed as a senior age person and have been playing computer games for a fair number of years now but I had untold fun with some of the puzzle-solvings with this one (even though I found them the most challenging so far). |
