Mafia (PC)
|
|
|
| Description:
Bringing together car chases, bank heists, a bit of gang warfare and a lovingly created 1930s world, Mafiais easily one of the most ambitious PC games of the year. Fortunately, it's also one of the best. Driven by a narrative that tells the story in flashback of Tommy Angelo, a member of the mob who wants out, the game positively oozes detail. From cars of the time through to a lively, living city to explore, you can't help but be drawn into the world that Mafia creates. The key gaming elements are also suitably polished. The missions generally mix in some driving work along with tense action elements, and they're predominantly interesting, diverse and fun to play. Plus they don't have any qualms about pulling the rug from right underneath you. There's a hybrid of game styles at work here, with the player needing to master both the driving and on-foot segments of the game. A useful tutorial at the start certainly helps there, and soon you're left to relish the surprisingly broad selection of vehicles and an arsenal that's as likely to have you handling a baseball bat as it is a tommy gun. The game is glued together though by the exceptional mood and atmosphere that it generates. Frankly, it's a multimedia feast, and hugely engrossing for it. Perhaps at times it's a little over ambitious, and there are moments when the pace slows a little too much, but these are few and far between. Ultimately, Mafia sets itself very high targets and pretty much meets them all. It's arguably one of the best three single-player games of the year, and it's a very demanding gamer who won't get their money's worth from it. --Simon Brew

I still remember when i first got this game and how wowed i was by the beautiful the storyline and environment is in this game. While it is far removed from obvious comparison GTA's wild fun this game is equally entertaining. The story is film-class as is the voice-over acting. You really feel for the characters which is vital when you get to the later stages of the story - seriously, this is one of the most moving games i've ever played.
As for the gameplay, on a good computer the city and characters move slicky, an immensely fun and realistic thriller. Missions are varied, tense and just hard enough that you feel a great feeling of accomplishment when you complete them.
Forget about the infamous racing level, i think everyone knows it's forgivable to use the cheat here. Overall Mafia is a seriously good game and is seriously recommended. |

Absolutely brilliant

An amazing game for an amazing price. Twenty great missions that really challenge your gaming skills (not to mention your patience when you get stuck!).
Mafia has a linear storyline, but its a fantastic storyline.
As it is set in the 1930s, the mafia people have really thought long and hard about everything, the city is brilliant (over 12 square miles), the clothes and cars are done with great detail and are of the correct time.
The graphics are a tad 'square' but doesn't affect the way anyone thinks about it and quite rightly so. The gameplay is exquisite, the missions are widely varied and get harder as the game goes on (20 missions with sub-missions).
There is a great variety of weaponry in the game from small handguns like colt 1911s to pump-action shotguns and the good old tommy gun, and the shooting really depends on your 'steady hand'.
Once you complete the game, you unlock freeride extreme, whereby you do mini-missions to unlock more cars (the prototypes) and explore the big city (there are - i think - three ramps placed in various parts of the city where you can just drive your cars up and fly through the air until you crash land a few seconds later - its funny really!).
It's a fantastic game and you won't be dissapointed. |

It's a long time since I played Mafia, but the mediocrity of most of the games I've played since led me to write a review. These days, it seems it's difficult to lay your hands on a truly great game that doesn't require you to spend £600 upgrading your PC, but Mafia certainly fits that description. You are Tommy, an accidental mobster, who has a likeable enough personality for you to pass over his many misdemeanours. Tommy is sent on various errands for the mob, and these really only involve shooting and driving (or both at the same time), but the game produces a remarkable amount of variety on these themes, which keeps it always enjoyable. The level of difficulty is spot-on throughout; it never becomes frustrating, but avoids being too easy. The dialogue is entertaining and well-voiced, and the graphics are good, but the real star of the show is the city of Lost Heavan you live in. Man, I felt like I lived there while I was immersed in this game. Learning to find your way around, short cuts and all, is great fun. It also becomes a place in which you have a history - there's the hotel where I did that bomb, over there is that church I had to shoot my way out of - so that you become part of a loud, bustling American city, with all it's passions, sleaze and lust for life. And each neighbourhood has its own character - I used to just drive around for fun, exploring run down port areas and leafy, well-heeled suburbs. It is extremely atmospheric. I wouldn't be surprised if the designers had been studying Edward Hopper paintings, as the use of light is very reminiscent.
And for a man whose interest in cars extends to owning a 1994 VW Polo out of necessity, I found immense pleasure in steadily upgrading vehicles, all of which handled differently, and how you would expect them to (the small sports cars fast but flighty, the larger saloons slower but smoother). Beautifully done.
The only real minus point as far as I'm concerned is that there are very few buildings that you can just walk into and poke around - it keeps you fairly much to the plot. But I quibble. Mafia is a truly great game - I can't believe they didn't do a sequel, but maybe it would have been a let-down. Highly recommended. |

Mafia

Mafia is such a great game - it's probably my favourite ever. Sure, GTA is good, but it's not that deep. You know, I practically cried at the end of Mafia. My eyes were all wet. I hope that doesn't make me sound pathetic, but it was a very sad ending, wouldn't you agree? I love it. It should be more well known. Five stars! |
