Awesome fun with lots things to play with
(September 11, 2007) |

This game is awesome fun to play, with the powers, the weapons, the vehicles (admitidly not as many as there should be) all culminating to create something magnificent. The graphics are not the best, and maybe the enemies and vehicles look a little like rejects from halo, and possibly the story line has the odd quible, but this is a game you play for fun and fun alone. What i like best is the fact that you start out with the huge guns and move down to eventually using just powers. I particually like the alternat fire modes of each weapon you unlock as you use each power and weapon making yourself an unstopable force. BEWARE there are some glitches in this game that can be exploited but this makes the game les enjoyable, it may be difficult for some people but that is no reason to use the games glitches to your own advantages. |

Surprisingly good entertainment and easily overlooked

Not worth full price, but definitely worth it if you can get for £5 or less. Graphics are a little bit limited like most games ported from a console and the menu UI and controls are a bit of a nuisance at first, but get past that and its ok. The storyline keeps you interested in between the carnage scenes and theres plenty of carnage. To summarize the gameplay.. its a little like Breed and Halo, though much better, with a bit of Oni thrown in for good measure. I love the powers you can collect and build up throughout the game, especially throwing stuff about and punching or kicking daft alients off platforms into space. Only real complaint is the length of the game, which is a little on the short side as console games normally are.. seems games are easier (and quicker) to complete with the trusty mouse and keyboard of a pc. Still its great fun and worth picking up a copy. |

"You look like as if you're having fun, sir..."

...yes, I am. This game improved tenfold after it's first demo showing - the graphics were fidigity and the controls were worse than useless. So a bit of spit and polish was added and lo and behold - a game that is joyous.
Max Payne plus Halo plus Psychonauts plus the bloke who scripted The Dig - this is what Advent Rising actually is (sort of). Your character goes through a development arc that sees him change from a grunt to a demi-god. And his hair gets longer. It seems that the aliens he hangs out with don't know what a hairdresser is and can't provide any decent razors either. Anyways...
This game intices you with the old "a fantastic shiny thing is just around the corner". All computer gamers are essentially magpies - drawn to shiny covers of their next game. This one gives you greater powers as you go through the game - the one right at the end made me wince.
Throwing your opponent about the screen is great fun at first - throwing them off a cliff into boiling lava is even better. Slightly shallow? Maybe. But good explosions are always fun... |

Advent Rising - not that good
(November 24, 2006) |

This game is ok but its pretty much a direct copy of HALO! Complete with buggies with top cover - the only problem is - it is nowhere near as good as Halo and the worse thing about it is the movie clips!
A 5 minute movie clip in game followed by less than 5 minutes of game play is not a good way to play.
Its ok if you like brainless third person shooters but I gave up on it after an hour or two.
It's NOT another half life - so don't buy it if you like 1st person shooters-you'll be wasting your money. |

Brilliant game

I stumbled across this browsing the Amazon pages here, read the other reviews, and in view of the games I had been waiting for which were originally due out this Autumn now being pulled back to Spring 2007, thought I would give this a go.
I'm really pleased I did. It's a blast! Very good storyline, good easy to use controls, fantastic graphics although I found the cut-scenes would not run in anything other than low-res. Still very impressive though.
It is written to be played in 3rd person perspective, although you can switch into 1st person. However, on doing this I found the frame rate dropped considerably. Still, it plays surprisingly well in 3rd person.
Very good sci-fi with hints of Greg Bear in the plot. Unreal graphics engine with real physics thrown in for good measure. All add up to an excellent game.
