Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Nintendo DS)
|
|
|
| Description:
In a nutshell: The only game based directly on the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, this is your chance to control Cap’n Jack Sparrow as he staggers his way through sword fights in his quest to save his own soul from Davy Jones. The lowdown: Movie tie-ins don’t have the best of reputations in the video games world but this does go to some effort to try and repeat the easy charm and constant action of Dead Man’s Chest. The game looks great at least, with Jack’s peculiar swagger replicated perfectly, and the movie soundtrack is superb. There’s also some neat puzzles to solve in the game, usually revolving around blowing up large portions of the scenery with exploding barrels. The combat though is a might too simplistic for its own good, with a strictly regimented way of fighting the three different styles of enemy. Most exciting moment: The best bit by far in the game is the completely separate multiplayer mode where you get to control your own pirate ship on the high seas. It’s a great little action game and with four friends a lot more fun than most of the single player game. Since you ask: Dead Man’s Chest is available on all three portable formats but not on the home consoles or PC. Instead the PS2 and PC has a Pirates of the Caribbean game named The Legend of Jack Sparrow, which is more of a prequel to the new movie. The bottom line: A good movie tie-in but only an average game. HARRISON DENT

Unexpectedly Addictive!
(March 10, 2008) |

As a female in my late 20s, I usually hate this sort of game, but seeing as my boyfriend bought it, I thought I'd give it a go.
I usually give up after 5 minutes on games which involve killing things, but was utterly hooked on this one. The game play is great, scenery pretty good too, and it's gripping enough to maintain interest (can't believe I get a sense of achievement after getting through each stage!!), while not being overly difficult i.e. so far no sections where you just die attempt after attempt and are forced to give up! (Although some bits I did need a couple of attempts - I am a girl after all!).
Overall, I'd recommend this game to anyone, as it's a well thought out game and definitely value for money. |

Good slashing fun

A great game. However, the graphics are a bit rough at times, and the music is not as good as in other games. The playability is excellent, though, especially as you can buy extra weapons and characters and then replay levels and unlock new characters.
I have played this twice and have really enjoyed it. The crocodiles are the best.
If you like a game that is fast and fun try this one. |

A good game
(May 25, 2007) |

This game is best played by fans of the movies.
The game is a bit short and doesn't really follow the actual film and it get's kind of boring after a while. I got bored of it quickly but I completed it all the same.
So, as I said, If you are a fan of the movies, this is quite a good choice for a game. |

Just Okay
(March 14, 2007) |

This game, in my opinion, is just okay. I got it as something to play while I was waiting for other games, I'd ordered, to arrive. And it did pass the time. However, the game-play was a basic hack & slash and I completed it fairly quickly. The difficulty levels did not vary much and although you can unlock new moves and weapons through the game, I completed it using two attack moves most of the time with all 3 characters and I found that the damage given by different weapons varied little.
The idea of switching between the 3 characters was a good one, though Elizabeth could become slightly frustrating, as she was easier to kill. Also the only Special move that seemed to be any good was Jack's as it damaged enemies on all sides of you, so you didn't have to bother aiming.
I believe Dead Man's Chest could have been a great game but it just never got there. Being able to unlock items is good but unlocking artwork from the movie is pointless in the sense of gameplay and the extra unlockable characters are often too weak to be of any use in fights, so again a bit pointless. Furthermore, though parts of the scenery were interactable it was still flat as you could only ever go one way (plus point you can't get lost) and parts of the scenery were often repeated.
If you were interested in this game I would advise not to shell out a lot of money for it, it's simply not worth it and not to expect too much. Also a gaming tip would be that as soon as get enough coins unlock Jack Sparrow and play throughout the game, it makes the game easier (though you may wish to experience what each character is like to play). |

Great sword-fighting fun!
(January 21, 2007) |

I think this game is very exciting, I own the PC version of the old Pirates of the Caribbean game, which is also good. I like the way you get to play as Captain Jack and the graphics, as always on a DS, are very good. It is a very challenging, but fun game. The 3 mini-games can be slightly boring occasionally, but the main game makes up for it. This game is not made by Nintendo, so it is a bit different to other DS games.
So overall, an excellent game. |
