If you're looking for the ultimate in road-racing realism, you've definitely clicked on the wrong title. But for pedal-to-the-metal arcade racing, Ridge Racer 64 brings home the chequered flag. Most of the racetracks are direct ports (with new scenery added) from the older Ridge Racer games for the PlayStation, but if you're new to the series, the Nintendo 64 version offers a great introduction to the classic racing franchise. Ridge Racer 64 features 25 different racing cars--but you'll need to win a race in order to unlock many of these sporty vehicles. Each car presents its own challenges, as control varies widely for each vehicle. The luscious graphics help create the game's illusion of speed. In particular, the feeling of a fast-moving environment remains intact in the processor-crunching four-player mode. The Ridge Racer box claims the game features nine racetracks, which is only partially true. The game actually has three tracks, with three gameplay variations for each track. According to my math, that still adds up to a total of three tracks. Seasoned Ridge Racer fans will tear through these courses in practically no time at all, while newbies might discover a less than deep racing experience. Fans of pure arcade racing will love the gameplay simplicity and stunning graphics of this winner. Amazing

This is the best racing game on N64! Ok, so there may only be three tracks - split into nine routes - and two of these tracks appeared on the PlayStation, but this is still a great, fun title while it lasts. The graphics are amazing, its fast, challenging, and time trial will last a lifetime. Plus, the nine routes are all available in reverse, giving a little more variety. |

Slip Sliding has come a long way

In the mid-nineties, when Sony had just released their Playstation console onto the world, Ridge Racer was the king of the road. Lovely graphics and a real arcade conversion that made gamers drool. However, things have come a long way... Gran Turismo did a lot for the racing genre, Ridge Racer64 adds nothing new to racing games, and the fact that your car can travel at 100mph sideways just doesn't cut it anymore. Get yourself Top Gear Rally, or one of the kart games. |

It is quite good fun to play. The graphics are excellent and the gameplay even better. It is all the ridge racer games on PSX rolled into one but better. If your'e looking for a racing game get this one. |
