Jet Force Gemini (N64)
|
|
|
| Description:
No matter how you slice it, Jet Force Gemini is one tough game. But the frustration of playing this epic is tempered by the sheer magnitude and quality found within. Be forewarned, this run-and-gun action-fest is not for everyone. In fact, novices may be better off letting seasoned gamers fight over this morsel. Jet Force Gemini includes three complete characters, more than 15 unique weapons, smart artificial intelligence (AI), and the rescue of Ewok-like creatures from giant space insects. For those who don't have an extra 30 to 60 hours to burn, JFG feels like the most bloated, uncut Hollywood epic ever. Yes, the game is deep, but not good enough to wade through enormous hours of gameplay. Buying JFG is a commitment, one that will have die-hards playing gleefully for many months, and the rest of us wincing each time we need to restart a level after being annihilated. --Jeff Young Pros: - An amazing array of gameplay styles, weapons and bosses
- Colourful graphics
- Good value
Cons: - Excruciatingly hard and excessively long
- Choppy animation
- Difficult control scheme

Underrated.

I was never really anticipating this game particularly, my brother got it and it was only then that I realised that it actually is very good! Basically, you start off the game and quite quickly find your sister and dog on your travels. The 3 main characters each have a series of levels to go through in order to meet up at the central location. As you go through the levels you will notice that you can't access the whole area, but after you've met up on the central level you can visit each other's levels and find new exits using different abilities. The gameplay I suppose is a little bit like a 3rd person Metroid Prime game... you power up your characters as you progress, finding weapons and health/ammo upgrades. The game is great to play, people moan about the controls, but they really aren't that bad, I think it's the 2nd control option is fine. It just takes a little getting used to. The locations are very varied, and the graphics are gorgeous- everything is very atmospheric and detailed too. The music also is very atmospheric and varied. It all totally suits the area and situation. I think this is among the best looking N64 games, and it doesn't even use the expansion pak! The game can get very hard, at the end of each character's set of levels they face a boss, and I remember spending a long time trying to beat Lupus's (the dog) boss. It rarely feels unfair though- and if you die you don't start far back. If things get too hard then you can have a friend use your little robot friend to shoot too on the player 2 pad which can come in very handy! You also do mini levels playing as the robot- mostly these are optional, but not totally. They are a 1st person race against the clock where you have to reach the end location while collecting items and shooting targets- different depending on the level. These are nice but going for a platinum award on all of them can get a bit much. I remember trying and never succeeding. There are lots of hidden things in here- multiplayer characters, levels, etc. There are also racing mini games- 2D Micro Machines style or 3D Wipeout style. The multiplayer is ok, aside from the co operative I mentioned, there is also a deathmatch, target range and the racing games. The deathmatch mode is not great, it's ok for a small diversion, but it's hardly Perfect Dark. It feels a bit dull, you don't get great arenas, and somehow it just doesn't feel good. This feels strangly soul-less and quiet really. There are a few different game types on deatmatch, but it just doesn't feel fun. Target range is good- it's an on rails game where you just have to shoot at the ant targets and avoid the bears- this is better, it's just a nice change. This is only fun for a few tries, it get's dull quite fast. The races are fun, not spectacular. This really shouldn't be bought if you're wanting a multiplayer classic! The single player really is good though- the levels are great, they don't feel too linear, and it is very fun. Its so satisfying to hear that juicy exploding bug sound when you hit with the rocket launcher. The main downside with the single player is that just when you get to the very end of the game there is a whole lot of collecting to do, I won't say any more than that, but it isn't very exciting. It does mean that you will enjoy the levels more fully than you had previously though. The game is highly recommended, it's huge and very well presented. It's very clever and will take a very long time to finish. There are no characters that will be familiar here (unless you count a poster in Banjo Kazooie), this is their first and only game, but despite not being a huge seller it is a very good game. |

Jet Force Gemini - Thanks for the memories.

Without a doubt this was the greatest game I have ever played. The story line was engrossing. Although a difficult game to master, it actually improved your gaming skills, with good characters and spooky levels. I've not played it for years and games have come and gone, but this is one game i'll always remember with fondness (careful, got a tear brewing!). Please, please, please Nintendo!, go on, release it for Game Cube. Many, many thanks CH (the oldest gamer in town) |

Return to Classic Gameplay
(June 07, 2001) |

Jet Force Gemini is a brilliant game, and seldom becomes even remotely tedious. The difficulty curve is pitched just right and provides a do-able challenge every time. This reviewer is perhaps, dare I say it, a bit rubbish? The soundtrack is one of the best game soundtracks of all time with brilliant thunderous, epic music, which could easily be mistaken for a ditty by Gustav Holst. Seriously, any of you could play it in your room and pretend to your classic-loving uncle that it is, in fact a famous piece - They'll soon want a copy for themselves. Just don't let them know it's from a computer game or they'll quickly convince themselves it's pathetic, after all! Of course, there is more to this game than the music. The return to 'Space Invaders' style formations, but now in a 3D universe must be commended. There are sometimes TOO many flying (and ground) enemies to take on. Just like there should be! Ludicrously fun flying bonus games also abound. To reiterate, those looking for depth and subtlety can go elsewhere. The Star Wars lovers, action fans and old-school gamers amongst us would do well to buy this game right this instant. They really don't make games like they used to. Apparently, they make them better. |
