To most people the Game Boy is something that small kids play Pokemon on, and maybe the odd Mario game. Well Nintendo plan to change all that. Yes of course there are a host of adult games, such as Perfect Dark and Tomb Raider, but finally one has come along that both adults and kids will like. Donkey Kong has always been a word that goes hand in hand with Nintendo, whether it was through the first Game and Watch titles or the SNES, or even the N64 it's nice to see that finally the big monkey has made its way on to the Game Boy. Donkey Kong Countryis an almost direct port from the SNES and follows the lines of a simple platform game, and because of its simplicity, works wonderfully well on the Game Boy Color. With bright colours, a fun soundtrack and the great task of collecting as many bananas as possible, it will have you chuckling away in no time. Combine this with some extra bonus features, such as shooting ranges and fishing ponds, and you've got a game that has all-round appeal. Without sounding too over the top, this is a great game, and a game that if you have a Game Boy you shouldn't be without... now, where's that final Banana. --Stuart Miles

Nintendo finally makes an effort for one of their ports!

I was rather dissapointed with the "Super Mario Advance" games. For those who dont know, they are ports of Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES. Super Mario All-Stars was a collection of Super Mario Bros 1-3 which was on the NES (before the SNES) with enhanced graphics. There was also the second version that had all the Super Mario Bros games AND Super Mario World, a game developed for the SNES launch.
However, Nintendo have now put all the Mario Bros series on different cartridges for the Game Boy Advance, meaning those who have not played the SNES game will have to pay more.
Just to let them be in the know, the first Super Mario Advance was Super Mario Bros 2. The 2nd was Super Mario World. The 3rd was Super Mario World 2 (Yoshis Island), and the fourth was Super Mario Bros 3. Personally, I dont think it works. They missed out the very first Super Mario Bros and realeased the old NES version - which I dont think you can even save on, and is already on Game Boy Color. Super Mario Advance 4 and 1 are not worth buying alone. If you owned the Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES anyway (like me) you will think Nintendo are trying to diddle you out of your money.
Super Mario Advance 2 & 3 are probably worth their money, considering they were games produced specifically for the Snes and sold individually back then.
But even so, thats not all that was wrong with the Super Mario series on the Game Boy Advance. The "improvements" are not to my liking. The games had voiceovers added which were completely out of place, and annoying. Especially on Super Mario Advance 2 (Yoshis Island) Another thing, is the throwaway Mario Bros remake on all the games. Mario Bros, being the game game before SUPER Mario Bros. Its not something new, as It was on the All-Stars collection on Super Mario Bros 3.
Someone who has never played the games on the Snes would probably think they are terrible, and I would agree that by comparison yes they are.
If you have a Wii, download Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES on the virtual console, if its available - I think it is.

Anyway, thats a rant about the previous ports of SNES games that Nintendo did for the Game Boy Advance. On to the next...
Donkey Kong Country is, in my opinion one of the very best games on the SNES. The graphics for that era are stunning.
Justice has been done for the Game Boy Advance now. The game is basically exactly the same. There are two minigames added, but theyre nothing really to fuss about. There are one or two voiceovers, but they arent in the slightest annoying in my opinion. The soundtrack has been changed a little in some places, that's probabaly to make up for the fact that a game boy will have very limited bass.
At the start of the game is a little bit of a cutscene, which was missing on the old game but its nothing special. The map has been redisnged, but I think thats due to the size / shape of the Game Boy Adavce screen. You can save after every level now as opposed to having to do more than one to save, which makes it a bit easier.
Overall, I think its a good port. There are limitations. The colours are a little messed up, but not as such that it really bothers me. And the sounds are a bit different.
Overall though, with the changes Nintendo have made, it looks like a fair amount of work has gone into this game and I credit Nintedno for that. Honestly, I pulled out my SNES to compare and id say the SNES version has it in terms of the graphics. Those new to the game wont know of course.
Overall, I would say well done to Nintendo. If you own the SNES version, its not hugely worth it. But if u want the conveinience of playing it on a handheld, or have never played the game, then go for it!

Donkey Kong's Best Game Yet

Donkey Kong country is great because in it Nintendo have merged a 2-D platform scrolling adventure with great graphics for the GBA. With plenty of levels and seven bosses to keep you occopied this game is great fun to play. The Funky's fishing & Candy's dance studio modes are great, and it's really fun to collect the camera shots. The only down side is that once you've mastered the adventure, there isn't really anything else to do and you'll be stuck inproving your fishing and dancing scores all day. Unfortunately, the game has no multiplayer so if you've got a link cable, it won't be much use to you in this game. But the great thing about it is that you can repeat the game over and over again and never get bored of it. There are a superb selection of enemies to fight, even if the underwater levels are very dull. The bosses on this game are rather easy, but the levels will keep you going for hours so overall, I reccomend this game for DK maniacs and first time players alike. |

If you own this game on the Snes, and still have your Snes plugged in,then this is really not worth buying. I bought it for nostalgic reasons,and after playing it, I did notice a couple of problems in the conversion:The graphics and music have suffered. So, if you have this game on theSnes, stick with that, because after I turfed out my Snes and played theoriginal, it felt more 'complete'. If you don't have a Snes with theoriginal, then by all means buy it - it is still a classic game, and sinceyou wouldn't know about any of the flaws in the conversion, then you'llenjoy it.
Also look forward to the conversion of Donkey Kong Country 2,the best of the Country Trilogy. |

Donkey Kong Country is a great GBA Platformer. You play through many levels with the opportunity to switch between Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. The controls are easy to get to grips with and are the same as many platformers, although the graphics aren't too much to shout about. This game will keep you playing, but if you completed it on the SNES, you might not be inclined to do so again. |

DK's back, but is it worth it?

When i was younger i owned this game on the super Nes and couldn't wait to see how it turned out on the gameboy advance. The donkey kong game i knew on the s-Nes was the same on the GBA. This was good for me because i wasn't really expecting any changes, even though they did add a few mini games, like candy's dance game and a fishing game. Great game and one of my all time favorites, but if you are expecting more from this game like extra levels, bonus creatures, maybe abit of a different story then you aren't gonna find it i'm afraid. |
