Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future (Dreamcast)
| Description:
If you've played games for some time, the game, Ecco the Dolphin might ring some bells. Originally launched in 1995 on the Sega Megadrive, the game was released at a time when the eco-warrior was the profession to be in. Greenpeace was at the forefront of everybody's hearts and The Body Shop was selling eco-friendly products to a needy nation. A lot has happened since then. The Megadrive has seen not one but two successors, first with the ill-fated Saturn and then secondly with the gorgeous Dreamcast. So with the power of the Dreamcast behind them, Sega have once again brought Ecco the Dolphin to the offering table. The results are superb. Ecco has finally been redeveloped for the new millennium. Sexy graphics, smooth gameplay and intriguing puzzles are all now present. Gone is the world of two-dimensional graphics: welcome to 3-D euphoria. The game, which is based in the future, follows your character, a young dolphin called Ecco, battling it out against a mysterious enemy known only as the Foe. Your task is to restore the one thing that might just save Earth from doom, the guardian, a defence mechanism that was broken on an earlier raid by the Foe. With the underwater world that you live in represented with such style and panache, this game pushes the Dreamcast to the limit, creating a graphical world far superior to that of Soul Calibur. Couple this with numerous puzzles that any Tomb Raider game would be proud of, and you end up with a well-balanced experience that gives you not only gives you a feeling of tranquillity but also that there is no rush to this game. --Stuart Miles

Ecco the dolphin is really cool !!

I have Ecco on my Dreamcast and it is so cool. The graphics are good; love the whales, the dolphins and the sharks! I really like being the dolphin because it shows the scenery under the sea. Also I love the jumping out of the sea and making the sounds. Some of the moves are quite difficult and it is easy to become stuck on certain levels. But very playable and a great product, I recommend it to everyone. |

Ecco Ecco Ecco

This is a gorgeous, very playable title which occasionally suffers from a lack of direction but that shows off the power of the Dreamcast as well as any game I've seen. The lack of guns, explosions and cars might be an instant turn-off for some of you but I'd urge anyone who's even the slightest bit bored of all those driving, shooting and fighting games to give Ecco a try. The PlayStation has Crash Bandicoot, Nintendo has Mario... and now that the Dreamcast has Ecco, forget Sonic! The gameplay is a mixture of action and puzzle solving and you'll need to be a bit handy at both if you're to succeed. My only real criticism of this is that it gets tricky quite quickly - if I hadn't been enjoying the scenery and the aimless swimming so much I think I might have given up after only a few hours' play. The hints and tips given to you by other creatures are often too cryptic to make sense of, and more frustrating still is the fact that you occasionally won't realise there's a puzzle to solve until it's too late. You're either running out of oxygen or getting eaten alive by a shoal of something nasty without any warning that danger was imminent. Effectively, you have to die to realise what needs to be done for next time - sure, you've got infinite continues, but returning to the continue screen ruins the harmony of what is generally a deeply engrossing game. |
