Blue Stinger

|
|
| Description:
Stranded by a bizarre meteor impact and surrounded by monstrous mutations, rescue agent Eliot Ballade must unravel the mysteries of Dinosaur Island--or die trying. As Eliot you explore the island and uncover the story behind the disaster. While most of the game focuses on solving puzzles and learning more about the meteor and its effect on the island, roaming zombies and huge monsters will keep you on your toes. Graphics are good--with nice flashy weapons effects--but not mind-blowing like Soul Calibur or Sonic Adventure. The vibration pack accessory (sold separately) provides great tactile feedback when firing weapons or getting mauled by a monster--it seems to spend more time rumbling than not. While the fighting is a lot of fun, some players may be frustrated by the regeneration of zombies. It can get tedious to exit a room after killing all of the enemies, only to run into them again when returning. The game's viewpoint system also could be improved, as it occasionally leaves you fighting an enemy you can't see. Parents should note that Blue Stinger is a horror game, and the gore flows readily All in all, while it doesn't build any new genres, Blue Stinger provides a solid gaming experience. Its flaws keep it from being a great game, but doesn't keep it from being a good time. --Aaron Karp Pros: - Long gameplay
- Involved science fiction/horror storyline
- Good balance between puzzles and action
Cons: - Occasionally awkward viewpoint system
- Repetitive enemy encounters

I remeber this being previewed in the ODM magazine(and on some Dreamcast launch videos I had)and thought it looke like the sort of game I'd like,The Dreamcast being the first proper console I had.
It's a third person adventure set on an Island that was hit by a meteor leading to all forms of monsters etc..,you can play either Eliot or Dogs, alternating as you like, each having their own pros and cons,Dogs can use heavier weapons and his fists for example.
The graphics were impressive at the time,Hi-res and detailed, the camera is awful but consistently so,meaning you get used to it's eccentricities and compensate, the controls are twitchy sometimes, especially when you need to traverse some pipes in a broken floor but the guns have auto-aim and it's obviously quite hard to miss something with your fists!!,yes the monsters return, just like Zelda,Metroid etc.but you need to kill them to get the money they drop, unlike Metroid where it just gets annoying, the bosses were very impressive, filling the screen, although a few were very similar.
The voice acting is terrible, but not unexpected for a game this old,the way characters move like they are on invisible roller skates is initially detracting though.
It's a good length as well but never drags, except for the 'freezer section'and the 'Christmas' muzak in the shopping mall has got to be the most irritating I've ever heard! |

I was a fan of Blue Stinger right back in the day of reading Sega Saturn Magazine. It looked promising and it kept up its end of the deal. Developed by Activision, Blue Stinger takes place this century, on a place called Dinosaur Island. You are rescuer Elliot Ballade intent on discovering why a meteor hit the island and released countless monsters and viruses. Bare in mind, this was a launch game for the Dreamcast and not all bugs may have been ironed out of the game as the developers wished. The lip-syncing is way off; the acting is a bit shoddy, but the storyline recaptures your energy to play it. It's true - once you kill a couple of monsters in one area of the game, leave, then come back, they reappear for you to kill again. But they are an easy task to overcome and they reappear for the simple fact of when you kill them; large amounts of money spirts out from their corpses for you to spend on shotgun, handgun and bazooka ammo. The game is not an attempt at a Resident Evil rip-off, but is a nice little action game in itself... and soon you won't be able to play this discontinued game, so do yourself a favour and play it as soon as possible. |

A good game with amazing graphics and great gameplay - it took me several weeks to complete and I enjoyed every minute. On the downside, the monsters DO keep poppimg back regardless of how many times you kill them. |

Nice graphics, shame about the game. Poor acting, even worse lip-synching and a control system straight out of Hell itself. A good selection of weapons, but I defy anyone to be able to hit creatures on the first shot! The fact that every time you return to a screen the enemies you had previously vanquished return back to life is just plain annoying. I'd love to say that I enjoyed the game, but that would just be a plain lie. |

The graphics are good, even though the characters are badly animated, the sound is also annoying, with inappropriate music for most situations. There is very little tension and virtually no strategy which is a vital aspect of 'survival horror' games. With games like the classic 'Resident Evil' you need to conserve ammo and know when to fight and when to run, but with this you just shoot some monsters, collect some cash to buy weapons, leave the area and return to shoot the same monsters again and collect the cash. In other words it is very repetitive and very boring. If you want a quick blast, rent it, but don't buy it. |
