Scooby Doo Night of 100 frights or SD100 is about as average a platformer as you'll see. Having said that it will mean a lot more to fans of scooby than those who dont care for the old shows. Despite its formulaic gameplay its actually a nice little pick up and play game. I had only 2 gripes with it, which were the method of moving between sections and the camera. First of all, whats right with SD100? well controlling scooby is pretty nice and the voice acting and sound create the air of authenticity and help immerse you in the gameplay. Also there is a laughter track which kicks in everytime scooby or shaggy do anything silly, again this helps make it feel like youre playing the show. Anyway, moving around is pretty simple but collecting hundreds of scooby snacks can get a bit repetitive. Also some of the scenery gets a bit dull after a while and you'll need to play this game in short bursts to keep plugging away. Also, i dont see why they couldnt have put a camera-pan function onto the C-stick, this wouldve made the game seem much more free roaming and eliminated some bad jumps and blocked views. Also they whole game requires you to unlock levels which you can return to at any point to collect missed snacks and so on. However i found it hard to get any real sense of progress and often would end up back in a previous section and not want to be there or know where to go next. Hoewever these are really minor gripes, but they do make the game a little frustrating at times. Many people have said that SD100 is too hard for kids, well i'd agree with that a little. Some of the jumps are a little tricky but i think the game is suitable for anyone over 8 really. To sum up, if you like your platformers as rip-roaring as Mario or Sonic you'll be disappointed with SD100. Its a friendly, easy-paced simple platformer, that, if you fancy a pick-up and play game which you want to play with your kid or on your own, and you like the scooby series, then its worth a look. |

Rooby-rooby-roo!!!

This is everything that was good about the original series - light-hearted banter, a slight amount of fear, and obviously fake monsters controlled by a criminal mastermind. The game combines more than adequate visuals and sound, and although there's a laugh track, it's not horribly intrusive. As the eponymous hound, you must rescue your friends, a wacky professor, and his daughter from the evil Mastermind. To help you with this, you have a shovel, some odd (very odd) inventions the prof. left scattered around, and a mysterious caretaker who proffers advice, not to mention pink fluffy slippers and a lamp-shade (don't ask!). If the game has a draw-back, it's the 2-1/2 D look which sometimes makes it very frustrating as Scooby misses his footing yet again because you couldn't quite position him right. Recommended for fans of the series, and those who like a good, varied platform challenge. |
