| Description:
The Spyro games on the PSone are remembered by many as some of the console's best 3-D platform games, and quite rightly so. In Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, his first next-generation adventure, the world's smallest, friendliest, purple-est dragon is back to jump, glide and start brush fires, and the new game starts off well as you watch the dastardly Ripto accidentally disperse the magic dragonflies across the gameworld and force you, as Spyro, to bring them all back to safety. One of the best things about Enter the Dragonfly is the huge number of moves at Spyro's disposal. As you'd expect of any dragon he can jump, fly, hover, head-butt and breathe flames--but now he can also breathe ice and electricity as well as magic bubbles (very handy for catching dragonflies, and a clever nod to arcade classic Bubble Bobble). Unfortunately the main problem with the game is the graphics, which, although they look okay in the screenshots, are very jerky when you play the game. The level design isn't terribly imaginative either and the game as a whole is surprisingly short. Since Enter the Dragonfly isn't made by the same team as the previous Spyro games--those guys went on to make the excellent Ratchet & Clank instead--it's perhaps no surprise that it isn't quite up to its predecessors. It's still a quality game though and certainly one to consider for fans of the series. --David Jenkins

Not bad....but not great either

Having enjoyed the previous 3 Spyro games, this one just wasn't up to scratch.
The 3-d graphics were a bit too much, however the scenery is very good and the detail of the worlds are lovely (falling leaves, fireflies, water ripples.) I found the levels too large and my hunt for gems and dragonflies became a chore rather than a pleasure. I missed the fun mini-games of its predecessors (they are some but not as many) and there is also no other playable characters this time - just Spyro.
The game was riddled with bugs and I was constantly finding Spyro stuck in a wall or out of camera view and the levels take ages to load. Often smashed treasure urns would make no noise when head butted but around a minute later you would hear it smash.
I didn't like the fact that all the levels were accessed from the main Dragon Realm insted of different worlds like Evening Lake and Midnight Mountain (Spyro 3).
Spyro is also rather slow at moving this time and lacks his quick turns and agility. I found the dragonflies often tricky to find and too plentiful which meant returning to levels a lot and having to re-kill the baddies which was annoying for me.
Although this game was rather boring, slow and not as enjoyable, I still found myself wanting to play it so there must be something good about it. I think the best points to the game was the music and the scenery, but definitely not a patch on the other Spyro's. Bring back the Speedways, multiple playable characters and smooth play! |

Enjoyable but not great

Having played only one previous Spyro and loving it, i thought this was quite fun. I didnt have any problems with clunky graphics or crashes (yet). OK, so for those who love big action fighting games with amazing enemies and graphics this is not such a good game, but for those who just like simple easy games and aren't huge gamers, i'd definatley say its worth it.
Good points:
1. its not too hard but it can be challenging (some of the tasks are quite hard but general play is fun).
2. Its not too over the top - i liked it because it was simple and i dont like playing hugely difficult games
3. If you like exploring there are lots of interesting things to look at
4. Time trials are challenging but fun
Bad Points:
1. Does take a while to load, although some people are saying that it takes more than 4 minutes, thats a lie. On my first edition second-hand PS2 it took no longer than 2 minutes (usually less) to load. Where is your patience?
2. Some tasks are a bit repetitive
3. Enemies aren't exactly that exciting.
4. Sparx is the most annoying creature ever to talk to.. whats the point in giving him a voice if he can't speak anyway!
Overall i'd say the good points outweigh the bad points if you want a fun, enjoyable and simple game to play every now and again. |

Don't be fooled!

I've been fooled by this game, not only once, but twice. When you see the picture of the mean angry Spyro on the box cover, you think to yourself this is going to be a excellent quality game, but when you switch the game on and start on a few levels, your thoughts will change and you will be disappointed with the results!
When the game was first released I didn't have a Playstation 2 at the time, all I had was the Nintendo Gamecube, I then got the game for Gamecube for Christmas in 2002 and I played it a couple of times. Absolutely disliked it from the start as the game-play is slow and it contains a load of problems! Therefore, I sold the Gamecube Version.
Eventually in 2003 I got the Playstation 2 and I saw the game again in Platinum Edition for £17. Now, it's not like me that I give games a 2nd chance but since I like Spyro and I wanted to keep hold of a Spyro collection, I decided to get the game, this time though, I decided to play till the end. And when the day came when I finished, I was so relived!
Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly is the first Spyro game not to be produced or developed by Insomniac Games which was the previous company that made the other three Spyro games for the Playstation 1.
The game was planned for the Playstation 2, Nintendo Gamecube, Microsoft XBox, PC & Game Boy Advance, but the head designers wanted to release the game in time for Christmas in 2002 as they believed sales of the game, would be high!
With this in mind the company only focused on releasing the Playstation 2 & Nintendo Gamecube versions, and so it was released in November 2002.
In my personal opinion I have never seen a game, which has so many glitches. You think to yourself that the disk is seriously damaged or scratched, but in reality it's actually the games quality itself! Here are just a few setbacks I've discovered while playing Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly...
1. Loading Times are too long!
2. Game play is intensively slow!
3. Shortest game among all Spyro games so far!
4. Only a couple of Warp Zones (Levels)!
5. When killing some enemies, they don't do a fall-over reaction; they instead slide along the floor backwards and do crying sounds. After about 5 seconds of this, they vanish!
6. Gems & Dragonflies can sometimes get stuck!
7. Buildings can get in you're way when gliding!
8. When exiting the Laua Island the game will freeze and you will loose any unsaved data!
9. Frequent problems with the Atlas Book!
10. Endless falls off the arena!
11. Corruptions of the arena!
12. And Loads More...

£17 Down The Drain! Worst Video Game Around The Globe To-Date!

My Wish: Whoever made this Spyro game; I wished they did one of the following three choices...
1. Forget the Christmas release and planned the game for a later date, to bring better development!
2. Made the game much more superior than this!
3. Or better than the other two subjects. Cancel the game completely and start again from the drawing board!
Final Comments: Don't be fooled by this game, because it's Spyro. I was fooled twice by the game and I wasted £17 because I thought the Playstation 2 Version was going to be better than the Nintendo Gamecube Version. But I thought wrong, I will definitely not give this game a third chance! If you encounter this game at a cheap price, do not buy it! RUN AWAY!!!

A huge let down

My kid loved this game when he first got it when he was around 8 - he played on it for hours and he thought it was great - he didn't care about the glitches or the framerate, but he's recently dug it out and played it next to the first 3 on PSone; he thought it was a huge let down
First thing was the amount of freezes and lockups and blank screens - he had to reset the game 3 times alone when he had just began a new file!
The second thing was the framerate. After reading numerous reviews, he thought it was fine when he played it, but later realised what they meant. It was so juttery and frustrating. A few glitches are fine too, you would expect it, but they are just too numerous to count in this game. Graphics, being trapped in corners, music skips etc.
The third thing is the misleading camera and controls. They should've kept the camera rotation the same, and Spyros moves were chunky and slow (and delayed), which ended up usually in death.
Finally is the slowness of the game altogether. The loading times make you go to sleep they take so long, and it has a loading screen before it shows you the developer logos or whatever! Everything is slow!!!!!
Also, Ripto sunk in a pool of molten lava in Spyro 2 - and he's back!
The music was the best bit, and he likes the graphics, though there are some glitches in them.
This game was rushed - I would highly recommend the first 3 by Insomniac, but this was such a downer - I wouldn't recommend this one at all. |
