Formula 1 2001 Platinum
| Description:
First and foremost, Formula One 2001 is a graphical delight--the detailing is superb. For example, when racing in the wet, plumes of spray vortex elegantly off the aerofoils of the cars in front--and if you can spare a glance from your busy cockpit you'll find that the big screens placed around the circuit are showing live coverage of your race to your adoring fans. Secondly, the driving experience is excellent. This is not a point and squirt game; it requires considerable skill to keep the cars on the track, let alone drive to pole position. So far so good but some of the technical features are disappointingly implemented. The damage to the cars after accidents is poorly crafted and the commentary from Murray Walker is highly repetitive and sometimes inappropriate. These two interact hysterically on occasions. After a particularly heavy shunt, Murray is liable to chip in with "Oh, and he's lost a wheel there", just as you rejoin the race with all four corners intact. In addition you'll find that your AI (Artificial Intelligence) opponents tend to demonstrate RS (Real Stupidity) in their depressing tendency to drive straight into the back of you if you're a tad too slow into a corner. Formula One 2001 is a game that pays superb attention to visual detail but lacks some of the technical detail that's needed for classic status; however, it's still a highly recommended game. Happily Murray can be turned off and you can concentrate on honing your driving skills in a superb graphical environment--but remember to keep an eye on those mirrors. --Mark Whitehorn

hmmm... not half bad
(December 23, 2003) |
in most of the reviews I have read, they slag off this game. But I don't think it is that bad. graphics: 8/10 commentary: 6/10 Detail: 7/10 total: 21/30 - not too bad? ok, maybe there are some prblems, but they are only small. eg. Michael Schumacher's car (or just Ferrari) in real life (2001) has the sponsur " Marlboro " on the nose come above the sponsur " shell ". but in this game, it has missed it out! And, the other mistake is on the menu when you are chosing your driver, it sometimes shows the wrong helmet eg. Montoya has Button's helmet ( 2000 williams ect) But otherall, a good game |

Very Good....but!!?
(November 29, 2001) |
I understand that the earlier reviews have the particular gripe about the lap times, well yes, they are ommited from the cockpit view, which I must say I prefer to drive from, but if you select the track view, there is a timer, as there are the stats within the race itself. I can never understand why programmers leave out such important details for a supposed 'simulation'. The inclusion of the pit limiter is cool but the commentary needs to be turned off. One major gripe with me, unless someone can tell me otherwise is that you cannot save both the season and the arcade mode on the same memory card. If you are halfway through the arcade mode and save it, then proceed to play and save a season, it overwrites the previous save. Again if you can save both, PLEASE someone correct me. Very good game but many improvements that should be there, are missing. |

i found this game a totally new driving expereince hence the title - the reality of it is thrilling and the graphics are as good as you would expect for a ps2 - if you dont have a steering wheal then do not fear for this game is just as good without - the reality of the apex's and the shicain's are exciting to turn your formula one vehicle through - take formula one to a new level and have your own grand prix every day - a game well worth buying!! |

Finally I know my game is not faulty!!!
(August 24, 2001) |
When I bought Formula One 2001,I had not played it on-rent,because it was only available to buy at the time, but as with all F1 game fans,I just could not wait to see how the Formula One 2000 game had been improved. I immediately played it to the horror that I had no lap times on qualifying.I hunted through all menus....but still no timing. I took it back to the retailer and asked for another copy,as I was sure this must be a fault in the copy. NO,the second copy had no lap times either! Until seeing the above reviews,I had no confirmation that it was NOT supposed to be timed. I am to this day quite convinced that initially it was intended for it to be timed as its predecessors had. Why? Because on 2 player mode it has timing, and on the back of the game case,if you look closely,it does show a timing screen!! Did the game creators forget about it?? Anyway, the rest of the game is a small improvement on the 2000 version, but it has gone downhill on car graphics as has been mentioned above. I do like the idea of the challenge mode, and the idea of a worldwide competition, but this idea needs expanded, with more tracks available for this particular mode, and the ability to switch to manual gear control,an option which has been excluded from the Spa "Challenge",which is very frustrating because I can go quicker with manual gearchange!(being the F1 game master I am) To be fair,it does include once again the ability for your car to leave the ground, which couldn't be done for the previous 2 games, but not to the extent of the '97 game which it doesn't even come close to. And at least now when you hit the barrier you can actually once again damage your car, which again hasn't been a feature of the previous few releases of this series. Overall, the best game since '97 from this series, but not quite as good as EA's previous release, and STILL nowhere near the quality of F1 '97,which STILL,I'm afraid to say,is the only must have for F1 gamers on PS1! I only reccomend this game to true die-hard fans of Formula One ITSELF,who collect F1 games! |

Not sure
(July 27, 2001) |
Why would someone create a game like F1 '97 and then go downhill in every aspect year after year since? The intricacies of this game have been either exaggerated or ignored, as the other guy said "why no lap times"? Isn't this the absolutely key element to keeping tabs on performance etc? It's nice to have the current line up, also the extra touches to the surroundings and effects are nice, but without gameplay any game is a dead stick really. F1 97 still has the drop over it's successors in my opinion, as some of the programmers should note that graphics aren't everything. Gameplay is the facet that counts every time. After all, DOOM wasn't impressive on the graphics front, but the game exceeds so many of it's competitors on playability alone. When F1 2002 emerges, it should maintain the ever improving graphics but go back to F1 97 for a few days tutorial on gameplay. |
